Recommended Weight Distribution for 800 lb TW Boat Trailer with Surge Coupler

Question:

I have an 07 Ford Expedition pulling a boat trailer with 800# TW and 8000# GTW currently using a WD hitch that is not allowing surge brakes to work. If I order a Reece Steadi-Flex WD, # RP66559 and a Pole Tongue Adapter #58393, this should work well, right? Do I need any other parts? Thanks!

That is a common problem when a standard chain-type weight distribution system is used with a trailer equipped with a surge coupler. The tension exerted by the spring bars and chains will prevent the coupler from compressing, which means reduced or no braking. Not a good situation with a large boat being towed behind you.

You are certainly on the right track with the systems you are interested in. I would recommend the Reese Steadi-Flex, part # RP66560. This system is effective with tongue weights in the 600-1200 lb range, where the other system that you looked at, part # RP66559 tops out at 1000 lbs. Choosing a system that places your trailer tongue weight somewhere toward the middle of the effective range is best. Since the weight of any cargo stowed in the cargo area behind the rear axle of your Expedition needs to be considered as tongue weight, going with the slightly higher rated system is probably a good bet.

The Pole Tongue Adapter, part # RP58393 is exactly what you need.

Although the weight distribution system includes a weight distributing shank, a hitch ball with a 1-1/4 inch diameter shank will be needed. For a 2 inch ball, use part # A-90. If you need a 2-5/16 ball, part # 19286 would work great for you.
