Weight Distribution and Sway Control for a 2007 Chevy Suburban and 6,750 Pound Trailer

Question:

I have a 2007 suburban with 10,000 distributed weight cap, and 5000 tongue weight, am towing a 6750 TT and am not sure what to get. I know I want WD and SC, but not sure what to get.

I would double check that tongue weight capacity because it is usually 10 percent of the gross trailer weight capacity. So it sounds like if using weight distribution the capacity is 10,000 pounds. More than enough for the 6,750 pound trailer.

To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

Trailer tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. So on a 6,750 pound trailer that would be 675 to 1,012 pounds. It is likely that if the vehicle and/or hitch capacity with weight distribution is 10,000 pounds then the tongue weight capacity would be 1,000 pounds. If that is the case you would be limited to 1,000 pounds tongue weight and not 1,012.

For a weight distribution system that has a tongue weight capacity range of 600 to 1,200 pounds I recommend the Reese Strait-Line system, # RP66084. The included shank has a max rise of 6-1/2 inches and max drop of 1-1/4 inches. Other shanks are available separately if more rise or drop is needed. You will just need to add a properly sized ball. Use # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch or # A-90 for a 2 inch.

This system comes with dual-cam sway control which prevents sway from starting. You also will not have to worry about disengaging the system to backup like you would with friction sway control. I have included some helpful links on determining tongue weight and on weight distribution for you.
