Expert Reply:

The most popular trailer hitch for your 2004 Ford Explorer is # C13550. When used with weight distribution it is rated for 600 pounds tongue weight and 6,000 pounds gross trailer weight. You will also need to check the vehicle owner's manual to determine its capacity. Whichever is the lower, the hitch or the vehicle, is the rating you need to go by.

If you need to add a trailer wiring harness you can hardwire in # 18252 to add a 4-Way flat.
