Can I Open Hatch on 2004 Lexus RX 330 with Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top 3 Bike Rack Installed

Question:

From what Ive read on your website, including from customers, it seems the HRF2-3 would work well as a bike rack on our car. My question is whether the rear hatch back door can be opened with the bike rack installed, either with the bikes on I understand the weight issue or with the bikes removed? When we travel, our Golden Retriever sits in the rear portion of the car and the back hatch is the best way to get him in and out.

I spoke with my contact at Hollywood Racks and he said that you will not be able to open your hatch with the Hollywood Racks Over-the-Top 3 Bike Rack, # HRF2-3, which you referenced, installed on your 2004 Lexus RX 330. The hinges on the hatch are not meant to support the extra weight, or the hatch could fall when opened due to the extra weight. Also opening the hatch changes the way the rack fits on the back of the vehicle and it could come loose.

One solution that would allow you access to your hatch is to install a trailer hitch like Draw-Tite # 75153, and then a swing away rack like the FullSwing # Y02465. This option will allow your bikes to stay loaded.
