Weight Distribution, 7-Way, and Brake Controller for a 2007 Ford Explorer Ironman V6

Question:

I purchased a 24 ft Dutchman Trailer dry weight is 2700 lbs, the rating for my Ford explorer is 5200Lbs max tow load. I have installed a class 3 Hitch from etrailer and my questions would be, would this weight distribution set part #49570 be compatible for my vehicle and this size trailer? I would also like a recommendation for 7 Way connector set, would you recommend having an E-brake system installed or based on the weight would i need the extra brakes? Thanks

To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

The dry weight at 2700 pounds would likely put the tongue weight at 270 to 405 pounds (10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight). Once loaded and ready to tow that will increase. But probably not enough for Pro Series system # 49570 since it is rated for 700 to 1200 pounds tongue weight.

The next step down from that system is # PS49582 rated for 550 to 750 pounds tongue weight. And then down from that system we have # PS49901 rated up to 550 pounds tongue weight. Once you have determined the total tongue weight you can select the system that has the capacity range that encompasses that tongue weight.

In some states there are certain requirements for having brakes on a trailer. It usually goes by the weight of the trailer. But adding a brake controller will only benefit you and take the stress off of the Explorer brakes so I do recommend it if the trailer has electric brakes.

It sounds like your 2007 Ford Explorer came with a 4-Way flat trailer connector. To add a 7-Way and brake controller you will need # ETBC7 and a brake controller. I recommend the P2, # 90885, because it is easy to set up, easy to use, and it is reliable. I have included some helpful links on weight distribution, determining tongue weight, and on the ETBC7 installation for you.
