Weight Distribution and Brake Controller Recommendation 2007 Ford Explorer Towing Travel Trailer

Question:

I have a 2007 Ford Explorer EL that can tow 8,750 to 9,000 lbs and we will be pulling a 2015 Rockwood Windjammer 3029W Travel Trailer by Forest River with a GVWR of 8850lbs. It has been suggested that we get an equalizer hitch and brake control. I have read through a million forum posts and i am still confused on exactly what we NEED. Please help!

A weight distribution system and brake controller would be an excellent idea for towing a trailer as heavy as yours. Let's first start with a weight distribution system.

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. You will want the loaded tongue weight of your setup to fall right in the middle of the tongue weight range of the system you use.

Based on what you listed for your trailer the Strait-Line system part # RP66084 would be an excellent choice for you. This system has a tongue weight range of 600-1,200 lbs an features the only sway control on the market designed to prevent sway before it starts. Verify your tongue weight first though before you buy anything.

For a brake controller I would recommend the Prodigy P2 Brake Controller part # 90885. This is our best selling brake controller because of how well it works and how easy it is to setup. This is a proportional brake controller that senses the amount of braking the tow vehicle is applying and applies a proportionate amount to the trailer brakes.

To install this controller all you would need is the correct install harness, part # 3035-P. I attached an install video for you to check out as well.
