You don't mention if your trike's own lights operate properly when the trailer is disconnected or if this problem has started suddenly, but if they do and the trailer light have worked okay until now then you'll want to check the condition of the 4-pole connectors for any signs of corrosion or trapped dirt. Sometimes a corroded or dirty connector can cause multiple circuits to become bridged together. This could cause the problem you're having. Even slight greenish or whitish discoloration on the contact pins can cause odd behavior. If the connectors are in bad shape clean them with an electrical contact cleaner or replace them with parts such as # 18252.

You also want to make sure that your trike's wiring has enough capacity for the current demand from the trailer's lights. If the wiring is overloaded by the power requirements of the trailer, then this can result in odd behavior from the trailer lights.

A circuit tester like # PTW2993 will make it easier to test the trike's wiring for proper signals and the trailer itself can be tested (while disconnected from the trike) by applying 12V power from a spare battery for example to each trailer circuit to see if the lights operate properly. If the trailer lights work as they should when you apply direct 12V power, then you can focus on testing the trike's wiring.
