Is a Torque Wrench Necessary for Installing a Trailer Hitch on 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan
Question:
how critical is it to have a torque wrench when installing a receiver? I will be installing a receiver on a 2103 VW Tiguan which has pre-drilled holes, just need to bolt it down. Thanks.

Any hitch for any vehicle will deliver its rated tongue weight and gross towing capacities only if installed exactly according to the manufacturer's instructions. Both the correct grade of fasteners (which are included, by the way) and their precise torque specifications are critical to safe installation.
Many auto parts stores will loan or rent tools like a torque wrench so you may not have to purchase one. Under no circumstances should a hitch be installed without securing the fasteners according to the manufacturer's specs.
The link provided will show you all hitch options for your 2013 Volkswagen Tiguan. You have a choice of 1-1/4-inch Class II and 2-inch Class III types. I suggest the higher-capacity Class III type such as etrailer # e98906 since it will offer a higher safety margin and broader compatibility with a range of accessories like bike and cargo carriers. Links to these product categories are provided.
Several articles on hitch installation and selection of hitch-mount accessories are linked as well.
