Carbon Fiber Bikes - Why Do You Recommend Bike Racks that Secure the Bike by the Wheel?

Question:

I've seen you recommend that hitch racks where the wheels are the main attachment points i.e., nothing latching onto the frame for carbon fiber bikes. Why is that? Carbon is just as strong as aluminum or steel if not stronger. Is it to protect the paint/finish?

Expert Reply:

You are correct! When someone invests in a carbon fiber bike we automatically assume that they will want to take extra precautions to protect it. This is why we recommend a rack like the Thule T2 Pro 2-Bike Rack, # TH83JV, which uses a ratcheting arm to secure the bike by the front wheel eliminating contact with the frame. No contact with the frame equates to less chance of scratches which equals happy cyclist!
