Troubleshooting 2005 Dodge Ram Factory Wiring with Inactive Center Pin
Question:
I have recently acquired a 2005 ram pickup 1500 slt package with hemi, well the 7 pin factory connection does everything my bass boat needs except disengage the surge brake when backing up. The factory harness just plugs in, I took that apart and tested the power to the plug, the signal, brake and taillights all had power, but I could not get power to any of the other little prongs, so I dont think the trailer brake disconnect wire was installed at the factory. There is a white wire that appears to be coming from the taillight assembly that possibly should be connected, this would give power to the Chrysler installed trailer harness so that when the vehicle in in reverse, it would power the plug in turn so the trailer surge brakes would be shut off. I cannot find a place to actually try to hook the white wire from the taillight assembly into the Chrysler trailer plug. everything else works but the surge brake disabler, can you advise. thank you

It sounds like the reverse light circuit of the 7-way on your 2005 Dodge Ram isn't activated. The center pin of the 7-way should have 12 volts of power when the vehicle is put in reverse. You want to first test that with a circuit tester like part # PTW2993. If this circuit isn't active, you will need to check the fuse panel for the reverse light circuit fuse to see if it has blown.
If you find you need a replacement 7-Way, you can use Pollak 7- and 4-Pole Trailer Connector Socket part # HM40975-11998. This is the same connector used OEM on late model Ram Trucks.
I have included our wiring FAQ for your reference.
