Can a Weight Distribution Hitch be Used on a 2014 Ford Edge with Factory 2 Inch Receiver

Question:

Hi, I have a 2014 Ford Edge with the factory towing package. The receiver is 2x2inch but is a class 2 350 tongue, 3500 total. All of the weight distribution hitches state that they are for class 3 receivers only. What is limiting me from using such a hit on my Edge? The hitch will certainly slide into the receiver, so where is the limitation?

I am not sure why Ford is calling a hitch with a 2 inch receiver a Class II when everyone else calls it a Class III. But if you check the hitch for a sticker or look up towing information in the owners manual it might say somewhere if you can use weight distribution or not.

Class II hitches are not rated for use with weight distribution because they are not designed to handle the additional stress. If you cannot find the information on the hitch or in the owners manual then you would want to talk to a Ford technician, not a salesman, to determine if weight distribution can be used or not on the factory hitch on your 2014 Ford Edge.

I checked the owners manual online and didn't find any information on weight distribution so if it is not on the hitch then you would have to call a Ford dealer.
