5th Wheel Hitch and Rail Kit Recommendation for a 2002 Ford F-250 Short Bed

Question:

Hello! I have a 2002 Ford F250 4x4 diesel shortbox and I need a fifth wheel hitch. Can you recommend something to pull a Carbon 327 Toy hauler? Dry weight 12410lbs, cargo 4090lbs, dry hitch weight 2970lbs. I was looking at the Curt with the custom rail kit it doesnt SEEM like a hard job to do myself? Thoughts? I dont want to spend a fortune, but looking for something that will make towing a fifth wheel not a miserable experience this is my first fifth wheel trailer. Thanks!

First you will need to start with a rail install kit. For that I would recommend a custom install kit like part # RP50082-58 that will minimize drilling and will cut install time in half. If you are looking for the easiest to install route, this would be it. Check out the install video I attached for more info.

Now since you have a short bed truck you will need to use a slider hitch so that you have enough clearance to make tight turn and not have the trailer hit the cab of your truck.

For a great slider hitch I would go with the Curt 5th Wheel Slider part # C16541. This has a 20k capacity which would be more than enough, has a slider that will give you 12" of travel, and has one of the nicest jaw systems around which will provide you with as quiet of a ride as possible.
