Fulton Coupler Repair Kit is Too Large for Coupler on Homemade Trailer

Question:

Hello, I ordered this part to replace the older hand wheel latch I have, but the bolt and bottom piece that grabs the ball are too large. This make me wonder if I should be looking at a compatible part with a 1 7/8 in coupler? The problem is my trailer was homemade, but I am the 3rd owner. Im also wondering if I can replace the hand wheel style with a latch style?

First, check the coupler you have for any model numbers or manufacturer information, and capacity. that will go a long way in determining if there is a kit that fits the coupler you have.

Without knowing a make or model on the coupler I cannot guarantee that any of the repair kits we have will work. Also, it is unlikely that you would be able to switch latch styles given the fundamental differences between the two.

Is the coupler welded on the trailer? If it is not welded on and we can't identify it to get the right repair kit then I would just go ahead and change out the coupler with a new one. If it is welded on you could still replace it, it would just required a qualified professional to torch it off.
