Curt Weight Distribution and Sway Control for a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 and 4,400 Pound Trailer
Question:
I need a weight distribution hitch with sway bar fot a 1999 Dodge Ram 1500, 5.2 V-8 towing a 2012 Gulf Stream Gulf Breeze @ 4400#. Would the Curt 174322 work or which hitch would you recommend? Thanks.

To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.
Trailer tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. For a trailer weighing 4,400 pounds that would be 440 to 660 pounds. Curt system # C17422 is rated too high for this tongue weight range.
I recommend an 800 pound system, # FA92-00-0800. You could then add friction sway control # 17200. You will need a ball as well. Use # A-90 for a 2 inch or # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch.
I have included some helpful links on weight distribution and determining tongue weight for you.
