2010 GMC Sierra 3500 Factory Integrated Brake Controller Locked Up Trailer Brakes

Question:

I have towed with this truck since it was new and no problems with the ITBC, the indask trailer brake controller. I had the setting on 9.5 gain and it seemed to work fine until today. The bars showing the gain were fine until today. Today, after a 100 mile trip, the ITBC locked up the trailer brakes. The bars were no longer showing the brake gain when I pressed the truck brake petal. I adjusted the brake gain down to zero 0inch and the trailer brakes released. The main display now shows Check Trailer brake systeminch even when I disconnect the trailer harness. Any ideas on how to fix this?

What could have happened is a short that tripped something or otherwise angered the factory brake controller. Usually a short is caused by a dirty or corroded trailer connector on the vehicle, trailer, or both. It could also result from damaged, frayed, or pinched brake magnet wiring.

It sounds like you will have to take the truck to the dealer to have the controller reset. Meanwhile you can check the trailer connectors and make sure they are clean inside and out and inspect the trailer wiring for any damage. You can also test the magnets to determine if they are the culprits behind this problem . I have linked a help article that shows how to test brake magnets.
