Trailer Hitch Mount Cargo Carrier for a 2015 Nissan Murano with Factory Class I Trailer Hitch

Question:

Purchased the new 2015 murano model and had the dealer put on the nissan factory tow bar/package. I realize now to late that it is a class I, 1 1/4 tow bar. Looking for a cargo basket i can safely use with that. Preference is one with 5 to 6inch sides. Would prefer aluminum as I will be mounting and unmounting by myself. However can not find any rated for that size reciever. Of course I could purchase an adapter but am concerned that the reason they are only for class II/III is because it is not safe to use with lower class receiver. Did look at the 20x48 Surco Cargo Carrier for 1-1/4inch Hitches - Steel - 300 lbs as an option if a lighter weight aluminum is just not reccommended

We have 4 cargo carriers that will work with a Class I trailer hitch. But there are no aluminum models available that will fit a Class I hitch.

The Reese carrier # 63155 is one option. It has the tall sides you are looking for. Even though it is steel it is only going to be about 44 pounds or so. It measures 11 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest part of the carrier.

The other option with tall sides is Curt carrier # C18145. It is lighter since it is smaller but should weigh about 25 pounds or so. It measures 6 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the nearest part of the carrier.

The other 2 carriers do not have the tall sides like you are looking for. I have included a link to a help article that explains how to measure to determine if either carrier will clear the rear bumper on your 2015 Nissan Murano.

I do not recommend the use of an adapter because using one will reduce the tongue weight capacity of the trailer hitch by 50 percent and put extra stress on the hitch and vehicle.
