Question:

I have a six pole plug and receptacle and I was wondering if there is a standard way to configure the wiring?

There is a suggested and common method for 6 function trailer wiring. You will have the following functions: Right Turn, Left Turn, Ground, Tail/marker, Brake, Battery.

I have included a help article on trailer wiring that includes a diagram and wiring matrix that explains wire color, function, and gauge needed, among other helpful information. Also, there are pictures to the right that show how the connector and receptacle wire by color and function. And I have included a link to a video showing installation of a 6-Way trailer connector.

Pollack wires the PK11604 in the following manner:
White - Ground Return
Brown - Tail Lights
Yellow - Left Turn
Red - Electric Brake or 12 volt Power
Green - Right Turn
Blue - Electric Brake or 12 volt Power

If you are looking at the back of the trailer end plug to put in the wires, the functions will be:

Top = Brown, taillights
Top Right = Red, Electric Brake or 12 volt Power
Bottom Right = Green, Right Turn
Bottom Left = Yellow, Left Turn
Top Left = White, Ground
Center = Blue, Red, Electric Brake or 12 volt Power

You will need to wire both the vehicle and trailer functions the same way. So the face of the vehicle connector should match the functions of the trailer connector if looking at it from the back (how I explain it in the previous paragraph).
