5th Wheel Trailer Hitch and Install Kit for 2014 Ram 2500 Short Bed and Sidewinder for Leland 7910

Question:

the trailer i have is a 31bhks 2006 model ,the bottom of trailer at perfectly level at the[ pin box is 60 inches to level ground]. I bought a new 2014 ram 2500 HD 4 by 4 . the bed floor to level ground is 38 1\2 inches high ,and from bed floor to top of bed rails is 20 1\2, so from ground to top of bed rails is 59 inches . the trailer axels has 2 inches of vertical adjustment . the pin box is a leland 7910 with 3-4 inch downward adjustment, i would like to use the sidewinder ST 400-SW16K . SO - would a husky 20k hitch work well or some thing else? i would like one that guards against high hitching and that has enough up and down foreward and aft adjustments because the truck has a 6.4foot bed length

First, when all is said and down you will need to have at least 5 or 6 inches from the tops of the bed sides to the bottom of the trailer overhang. It sounds like there is plenty of adjustment for height so that shouldn't be a concern.

A Sidewinder will be able to adjust vertically like the OEM pin box and the hitch you choose will also be height adjustable. For a Leland 7910 pin box Sidewinder # ST400-5AS16K is correct. It is rated for 16,000 pounds.

On any hitch you have the potential for high-hitching. The way to avoid that happening is to have the skid plate of the pin box slightly lower than the hitch head skid plate so that the trailer essentially ramps up into the hitch.

For a 5th wheel hitch you will first need an installation kit. I recommend custom installation kit # C16427-204 because you will not have to drill into the truck frame to install it. I have linked a video showing an example installation for you.

For a hitch that will fit the installation kit and has a capacity high enough to match the Sidewinder at a good price I recommend Reese hitch # RP30928. It has a 4-way pivoting head and dual jaw design. Unfortunately we do not currently carry Husky branded hitches at this time so I would stick with the Reese 20k hitch.
