Equipment Need for Flat Towing a 1980 Jeep CJ-7
Question:
I have a cj7 Jeep that I would like to tow behind my motorhome. Im interested in a Roadmaster stowmaster 5000. I have yet to purchase the towbar. Would this be the recommended apparatus or should I go with another product? Then I will need the proper base plate application. Im also interested in a ready brake brake supplement. Information on this, as well. Thank you

Neither Roadmaster nor Blue Ox have a frame mounted base plate option for your 1980 Jeep CJ-7, but there is a bolt-on base plate bracket kit, part # BX88230 which will require that the bumper be modified and strengthened in order to use the brackets. The tow bar includes the necessary safety cables.
You'll need to use a tow bar that's compatible with the Blue Ox brackets, so the Stowmaster # RM-501 you referenced wouldn't be a good choice. I'd recommend going with the Blue Ox Acclaim, part # BX4330.
For a lighting system, I'd recommend a simple bulb and socket system like the Roadmaster Bulb and Socket Kit, part # RM-155.
We don't offer the Ready Brake system. If my memory serves correctly, it's a pretty cool set up, using a surge brake type system to pull the brake pedal of the towed vehicle. I believe the major drawback of the system is that there wasn't a good way to set up a breakaway system, since the system was purely mechanical. I usually recommend the Blue Ox Patriot # BLU37TR. This system is extremely easy to install and remove, and only takes seconds to set up.
Generally speaking, manual transmission equipped vehicles won't require modification in order to flat tow them. 4 x 4 models would need a neutral position in the transfer case. I'd urge you to clarify this for yourself.
