Hitch and Hitch-Mount Cargo Carrier for 1995 Toyota Celica GTS Convertible

Question:

Hi, Im interested in purchasing a Pro Series Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier for my 1995 Toyota Celica GTS convertible. I have a hitch installed with a 2inch receiver and am wondering which carrier is the best fit and the safest load for my car to carry. Im hoping to carry at least 300 lbs in cargo, if possible. Thanks in advance for your help.

The one trailer hitch fit I can confirm for your 1995 Toyota Celica GTS Convertible is for a light-duty 1-1/4-inch Class I type, but not for a 2-inch hitch. 2-inch hitches are medium duty that can be rated either as Class III, IV or V. I suggest you have a look at the linked articles on hitch sizes and classes to make sure of exactly what is installed on your Celica before choosing a cargo carrier.

The weight limit for what you can carry on your Celica will be a function of the hitch capacity (which is usually indicated on its safety/warning sticker) minus the weight of the carrier itself. If the vehicle itself carries a lower tongue weight rating than the hitch then the lower limit applies.

Let's say you do have a Class I hitch; this will have a tongue weight (downward force) rating of 200-lbs maximum. If you choose the 20x48 Curt Cargo Carrier # C18110, which weighs 30-lbs, this means that your net cargo weight capacity is 170-lbs (200 - 30 = 170).

The linked article will help explain this further.

It is important that your cargo not block other drivers' views of your taillights. Light kits such as the etrailer License Plate and LED Taillight Mounting Kit for Hitch Mounted Cargo Carrier Item # e98943-44LED are available for times when additional lighting is required. A wiring harness like # C56175 is required to operate the light kit unless you already have a 4-pole trailer connector on the Celica.

If you DO have a 2-inch hitch, please advise its rated tongue weight capacity (from its sticker) and I will be glad to recommend a suitable carrier.
