Fifth Wheel Tailgate and Hitch Recommendation for 2015 Ram 2500 Crew Cab
Question:
I purchased this truck to replace my half ton 2012 Dodge and for the purposes of towing a 35-40ft fifth wheel trailer that we have yet to purchase. I was advised by my partner that fifth wheel towing is not fun and that I should consider a goose neck. Hes reason was I would forget to put down the tailgate on both entering and exiting the hitching process. Regardless of this being something I will or wont do, I would like to take it out of the equation. It would appear to me that a safe way of doing this and getting the most of the towing experience would be to get a fifth wheel tailgate and fifthwheel hitch as opposed to a gooseneck conversion. I would appreciate your input here since you are the experts and be happy to make my purchase through your site if the recommendation is reasonable and cost competitive. Thank you!

It is always recommended to use a like style hitch for your trailer; fifth wheel hitch for fifth wheel trailer and gooseneck hitch for gooseneck trailer. Using a standard adapter like the Convert-A-Ball Cushioned 5th-Wheel-to-Gooseneck Adapter, # CAB-C5G, can cause added stress for the trailer frame and hitch which could potentially void the frame warranty on your trailer.
In addition, even if you were to use an adapter, you would not have sufficient clearance to complete the hitching/unhitching process of your fifth wheel trailer without lowering the tailgate on your 2015 Ram 2500.
With the above being said, I recommend going with a fifth-wheel hitch. The fifth wheel hitch will provide a more comfortable ride and better handling when towing a fifth-wheel trailer. If your 2500 has an 8' bed, take a look at the Curt Q20 Dual Jaw 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch, # C16130, or Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch w/ R20 Slider, # C16541, for a 6' bed. Both offer a dual jaw, pivoting head, color-coded lock indicator for added safety/security and will use the Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit, # C16427-204, for your Ram truck.
Now for a 5th wheel tailgate, whether you feel you need it or not ;-). My recommendation would be for the Stromberg Carlson 100 Series, # VGD-10-100, made of steel or the composite plastic 4000 Series, # VGD-10-4000. Both tailgates will look great on your truck and offer that added protection against an "I told you so" moment.
I have attached an article and a couple videos for you.
