Does a 2008 Pontiac Torrent Require a Transmision Cooler to Pull a Camper Under the GTW Limit
Question:
Do I need a trans cooler if I pull a pop up camper that is under max towing weight. The dealer states aftermarket trans coolers are not recommended because they already have one built in.

You would use a transmission cooler if, when towing your trailer, your transmission fluid is above 200 degrees Fahrenheit. However, if the manufacturer says not to install one, then you need to follow their recommendation. There could be any number of reasons why an aftermarket transmission cooler should not be installed. It might not fit anywhere, depending on where mounted it could block the engine cooling system too much, or the vehicles just have not been tested for one. If they did not give you a reason, other than it has one, I would ask why. And I would ask its capacity, where it is mounted, and at what temperature it keeps the fluid. The optimal range is between 160 to 200 degrees Fahrenheit.
You might also be interested in adding a brake controller if the trailer weight is at least 50 percent of the vehicle's weight, and the trailer has electric brakes. I recommend the Tekonsha Prodigy P2, # 90885. It is one of our most popular and highest rated models. I have included instructions and two installation videos below. You will also need a 7 and 4 Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7, and a Curt T-Connector Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring, # C56012.
The brake controller install videos show the 7 and 4 Way Installation Kit, # ETBC7, being installed as well. I have included an additional video and instructions for the # C56012 kit.
