Trunk and Hitch Bike Carrier Options for 2013 Toyota Prius C
Question:
2013 Toyota Prius C Is the Thule OutWay bike trunk mount compatible? I read reviews that said this rack is so heavy that on some cars it causes the trunk to pop open or dents the car. Are both the Thule Helium Aeor 2 bike rack AND Draw Tite Hitch compatible w the 2013 Prius C? Does it void the Toyota warranty to add a hitch? When not using the rack, do you recommend removing the hitch or can it just stay permanently mounted?. THANKS

The Thule OutWay 2 trunk-mount rack # TH45JV is a solidly-built quality unit whose sturdy construction results in about a 19-lb weight. On smaller and lighter vehicles like your Prius C the sheet metal may not be strong enough to handle this weight along with the weight of your loaded bikes. This is why this carrier is not recommended for your car.
We do offer other trunk racks whose lighter weight makes them a better choice. The link provided will let you select the version of the Prius C you have (either with or without the rear spoiler) to then see compatible trunk carriers. If you have a spoiler then your best options are the 2-bike # HRF2 or the 3-bike # HRF2-3 both from Hollywood Racks.
A hitch and hitch rack are a better option overall since this means your car's sheet metal will not have to bear the weight of your bikes; instead the vehicle's frame - it's strongest part - will do that. A hitch will also enable you to use a compatible cargo carrier if the need arises. We offer light-duty Class I hitches for your car that can carry up to 2 bikes and the one I suggest is Draw-Tite # 24971. Written instructions are linked along with two helpful installation articles. All required hardware is included. Installing a hitch will not void your warranty and the hitch can stay in place for times when you need to install the rack.
Thule's EasyFold 2 Bike Rack # TH903202 is an ideal choice for your Prius. Lightweight aluminum construction and advanced features make this an outstanding choice. Please see the linked video for more information on the EasyFold.
