How to Pick Out a Weight Distribution System for a Trailer that Weighs 3,700 lbs

Question:

When selecting a WDH, do you want to choose a system that is just over or just under. I have a trailer that weights 3700 or so. So the 4k WDH or 3500 WDH would work best? Also, when it mentions the shank length requires 1-1/4inch diameter shank I have a 1inch dia. will that still work? is the 1 -1/4inch just a max?

The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached an FAQ on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well.

You want to pick a system that has a tongue weight range that your loaded tongue weight falls right into the middle of. If your trailer weighs 3700 lbs when loaded that means your tongue weight will be most likely 370 lbs to 555 lbs.

Assuming that is correct you would want the Reese Weight Distribution System part # RP66540. This system has a tongue weight range of 200-600 lbs which would work well for you.

The diameter shank needed for the hitch balls is 1-1/4. You would not want to use a smaller diameter shank with your system. My uncle actually had too small of a diameter hitch ball installed in his WD system and it caused the head of the assembly to crack.

If your coupler is designed for a 2 inch ball you would want # A-90, if you have a 2-5/16 inch ball you would want the # 19286.
