Comparing Trunk Mount and Trailer Hitch Mount Bike Carriers for a 2014 Ford C-Max Hybrid

Question:

Hello. Ive just picked up a 2014 Ford C-Max Hybrid. Im looking for a bike rack for the car before spring comes along. Can I use a trunk mounted rack as I did previously on another hatchback/SUV, or must this be a trailer mount? What are the pros/cons for each, including total pricing? Thanks!

Starting with the last question, a hitch mounted bike rack is generally going to cost more when you factor in the cost of the trailer hitch.

Trunk mount racks can be used on your 2014 Ford C-Max. I have included a link to the options that fit for you. The benefits of a trunk mount are lower cost, no additional mount is needed, and they can store easier size they take up less space than many trailer hitch mount racks.

Trunk mount bike racks are limited to 2 or 3 bike models, they carry the bikes closer to the vehicle than a hitch mount, and the rack must make constant contact with the vehicle. It is possible for the bike rack to scratch the vehicle paint if the rack and vehicle are dirty during installation.

A hitch mounted rack is going to be more stable, carry the bikes further away from the vehicle, and will not make contact with the vehicle. Some are easier to load bikes onto than others. Platform bike racks generally make loading easier but the racks are heavier and not as easy to store compared to traditional hanging racks and trunk mount racks.

A hitch mount rack will cost more overall due to the cost of the hitch and the bike rack. Some hitch mount racks can be heavy and/or difficult to store due to the size.

If you go with a hitch mounted rack then you will need a trailer hitch. Most of the hitches for your C-Max are Class I hitches. This means you would be limited to 2 bikes at most. But there is a Class II hitch available, # C12092, and you could use it for 4 bikes. However, on this particular hitch, Curt, the manufacturer, says that you have to use stabilization strap # 18050 when using the hitch with a bike rack.

For a 2-bike hitch mount rack the Trailhead, # S63360, is a popular option. I have linked a video review of this carrier for you.

If you go with a trunk mount the Thule Passage you referenced, # TH910XT, is listed as a fit for your C-Max. I have linked a video of this carrier as well.

For hanging style bike racks, if you will be carrying any bikes that do not have a top frame bar that goes straight across (like a typical men's bike would) then I recommend using bike adapter bar # 64005. This will allow you to carry those bikes more level and will provide better ground clearance. I have to use these adapters and without them my wife's bike would be at a severe angle and I would not be able to load my son's bike at all. I have linked a video showing how the adapter works.
