Weight Distribution for a Trailer with 750 Pounds Tongue Weight and 2014 Ram 1500

Question:

are you better at the lower end or higher end of the weight rating? 1500 ram with sunset trail 290QB, dry weight 5774, tongue weight 664 figure at least 100lb behind second axle to be around 750. would this be the model to purchase or go up to the 750 - 1000 tongue weight model?

It would be better to be at the lower end but there are disadvantages of being over or under the capacity range of a weight distribution system.

If the tongue weight is under the capacity then the ride will be stiff and bouncy and you could actually see damage to the trailer. If the tongue weight is higher than the system's range it will not be effective at all.

Ideally you will want a system that puts the total tongue weight in the middle of the system's range. You mentioned a trailer tongue weight of 664 pounds but you also need to add in the weight of anything behind the rear axle in the bed of the truck. The weight in the trailer is already factored into its tongue weight.

So if you determine that 664 is your total tongue weight including anything behind the rear axle of the truck then the 750 pound system would be fine. If it is over 750 pounds then go with the 1,000 pound system, # PS49583. I have included some helpful links for you as well.
