In my opinion, a hitch mounted bike rack is always the best way to go especially since you mention having a problem with a trunk mounted bike rack in the past. Hitch bike racks offer the most protection for the vehicle by carrying bikes out and away from the vehicle, make bikes much easier to load, and can be used on most vehicles with a hitch.
If your 2012 Chevrolet Sonic isn't already equipped with a hitch, I recommend going with the Curt Class I Trailer Hitch Receiver, # C11240. This hitch offers bolt-on installation with no drilling or welding required.
When it comes to a hitch mounted bike rack, one of my personal favorites is the Swagman XTC-2 2-Bike Platform Rack, # S64670. This bike rack is extremely easy to use and secures your bikes at 3 different points to ensure that they stay put. The maximum bike capacity for this rack is 35 lbs per bike.
If you plan on carrying women's, children's or alternative framed bikes, you may find it easier to secure the bikes by using an adapter bar like the Swagman Easy-Out, # 64005. This bar attaches between the seat post and the handlebar stem on your bike to give you a horizontal surface to secure to.
I have included a few videos for you to check out.
