Recommended Brake Controller and Weight Distribution With Sway Control for a 2012 Toyota Tundra TRD
Question:
I have a 2012 Toyota Tundra Crewmax TRD with towing package. The indicated towing capacity is 9,000 lbs and max tongue weight from one source I found is 1,010 lbs. I didnt see this stamped on the hitch anywhere I just purchased a used 06 Jayco Jayflight 31bhs which has advertised UVW of 6885, DHW of 970 lbs, GVW of 9000 lbs, and cargo capacity of 2,115 lbs. Im interested in a brake controller and weight distribution hitch with sway control. I noticed the Tekonsha p2 and p3 controllers and appreciate their ease of installation. Id like a hitch that will allow easy connection, turning, and reverse. Ive been on your site and appreciate all of the detailed info you provide. Id be glad to call and talk to a rep, but dont have time right now. Any recommendations are appreciated. If you need any more details, let me know.

When choosing a weight distribution system, you need to go by the tongue weight of the trailer when loaded and ready to tow plus the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.
I recommend the Reese Straight-Line weight distribution with sway control # RP66084. It will have a tongue weight capacity of 600-1,200 pounds and gross towing weight of 12,000 pounds. This also comes with an adjustable shank that you will need. The Reese weight distribution # RP66084 will allow backing up which is a great convenience!
Please double-check your owners manual to determine the maximum tongue weight as you don't want to exceed it. I did a little research and it does seem to have a 1,010 tongue weight capacity on the 4x4 Crewmax and 1,040 on the 4x2 Crewmax.
The hitch ball I recommend is # 19286 and will have the required 1-1/4 inch diameter.
The brake controller you referenced and I highly recommend is the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195. It has a customizable LCD display, storable settings, 3 boost levels and more. You will need the plug-in wiring adapter # 3040-P which will allow you to plug in the Prodigy P3 # 90195 with ease.
I have included several helpful FAQ's and videos for you too.
