Roof Cargo Carrier for a 2000 BMW 3-Series Sedan

Question:

I have a 2000, BMW, E-320D 4-door, sedan that I bought in Portugal last year for our vacation home. The vehicle is only used 2 moths a year and is garaged the remainder of the year. We often have family and friends that come to visit us, and typical of American travelers they always over pack their luggage, and Im stuck at the airport with way to much luggage to get into the trunk. I need to know the correct luggage carrier to get for my type of vehicle. Bear in mind the car does not have any roof rails like on some of the newer models, and you should be able to see that in the photos. I need a carrier that can easily be removed when not needed.

Since you use your Bimmer so infrequently I recommend passing on the cost of a roof rack and cargo box and going with something that would be better for infrequent use.

You can use a roof mounted cargo bag. We have several cargo bags that can be used on a naked roof. I have included a link to them to the right. The most popular option is Rightline bag # RL100S30. It has 18 cubic feet of space and you can use the car clips, # RL100600, to secure it to the roof (so that you do not have to run straps through the interior of the vehicle).

I also recommend protective pad # RL100650 to help keep the bag in place while driving. Anytime you mount anything to the roof be sure to first consult the vehicle owners manual and/or BMW for the roof weight carrying capacity.
