Weight Distribution for a 2012 Ford F-150 and 9,300 Pound Trailer

Question:

Hello, I have a question about the Reese Strait line systems. I tow a Coachmen 320 BHDS which is approx. 9300lbs. Loaded for a week of camping with a hitch weight between 1200-1280lbs. my TV is a 2012 F150 Max Tow pckg. With GVWR of 7700 lbs. I am upgrading from my present hitch and would like to know whether you recommend the 15000lb. Or 12000lb. Reese system? The trailer is 3611inch long. I am also considering the Equalizer brand as well. Thank you for any guidance in this matter.

To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

So if the 1200 to 1280 pounds includes any weight behind the rear axle of your 2012 Ford F-150 then I recommend going with the Reese Strait-Line system rated for 800 to 1500 pounds, # RP66130.

The dual-cam sway control in the Strait-Line system will prevent sway from starting. I have experienced both it and the Equal-I-zer systems and find the dual-cam sway control to be superior. But at the same time many people swear by the Equal-I-zer systems. Either way either of the systems should work well for you.

The Strait-Line system does not include a shank or a ball. I have included a link to all of the shanks you could use. You will need one that has the right rise or drop to tow the trailer level. For a ball use # 19286. I have also included some helpful links on weight distribution and determining tongue weight for you.
