The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached an FAQ on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well.

Typically tongue weight is 10-15 percent of the total trailer weight, so if your 2500 lb trailer was loaded with 900 lbs of cargo you would be looking at a total weight of about 3,400 lbs. That would mean your tongue weight range would be most likely 340 lbs to 510 lbs.

For a system that would fit that range well I would recommend the Reese Weight Distribution # RP66540. This system has a range of 200 lbs - 600 lbs.

For hitch balls you would want either # 19286 for a 2-5/16 inch ball or # A-90 for a 2 inch ball.
