A Safe Ride is a Comfortable Ride

If you're looking for the best tie-downs for your camper, frame-mounted is the way to go. The frame is the most solid part of your entire vehicle, so it just makes sense to attach your camper to something that's not going to warp, bend, or twist. Even more importantly, the camper's center of gravity will sit lower and its weight will be spread across the entire bed. This avoids a top-heavy load perched on top of your bed rails that's liable to sway and get pushed around by crosswinds. The camper's not going to shift or slide around while you drive; it's going to stay put, and your truck is going to handle just like it does without a camper.

Quick Tip: If you have a plastic or spray-in bed liner, it's important that you use a rubber mat under the camper to eliminate any sliding or bouncing.

Don't Ruin Your Truck's Looks

Frame-mounted tie-downs are also a great pick for preserving your truck's good looks. The brackets install on the frame, tucked nearly flush with the underside of the vehicle. Remove the arms from the brackets when you're not hauling your camper, and the brackets will be barely visible.

Custom Fit, No-Drill Installation

Completely custom to your vehicle, the tie-downs attach to exisiting holes in your frame so that there's little to no drilling and no need for any modifications. Because they're custom, you'll want to use our in-house application guide to make sure you get the exact right model. The tie-downs you need might be different depending on what type of hitch or other accessories you have.

Securing Your Camper

TorkLift Tie Down Example

Once the tie-downs are installed, use a set of turnbuckles (sold separately) to secure the camper to the tie-downs. The shank on each arm has 2 pin holes so you can choose how far out they extend, that way the turnbuckles can reach the anchors on your camper without making contact with your truck. Tighten the turnbuckles to the correct level of tension (not too tight!).

where to put camper tie downs

Make sure the anchor points are offset from the tie-downs instead of lined up with them so that they will hold your camper from multiple angles. This is important for keeping your camper from shifting. Two holes in the attachment plate of the tie-downs let you find the best angle for you camper anchors.

Video Transcript for TorkLift Custom Frame-Mounted Camper Tie-Downs Installation - 1997 Ford F-250

Today on our 1997 Ford F250 Heavy Duty, we're going to be installing the TorkLift Custom Frame-Mounted Camper Tie-Downs for the rear of the vehicle, part number TLR3501. Here's the tie-down receiver that we're going to need to mount to our vehicle's hitch. You want to try to put it as far back on the hitch in the vehicle as possible, but yet you also have to keep in mind that you want to make sure it doesn't interfere with things. Like back here, we wouldn't able to drill our four holes, but right in this area here, on the other side we have plenty of room to drill through and not hit anything, as well as to install our hardware. We also want to make sure that the insert right here, when you put the insert into your receiver, that it will clear the body of the vehicle, which it will. We're going to go ahead and hold our piece up into position. We're going to take a paint marker and mark the four holes that we'll need to drill. Now when drilling out the holes, we will use the step drill bit method by starting smaller and then working our way up to a 7/16ths drill bit.

Next we're going to go ahead and take our tie-down receiver, we'll be attaching it to our hitch here using these 3/8ths bolts. We'll slide our bolt through, put one in each of the four holes we just drilled, and on the inside, put a flat washer, a lock washer and a hex nut. We'll repeat this for all four locations. Now that we have all of our hardware loosely installed, we'll go ahead and tighten it down and then torque it to the manufacturer's specification. Now with our receiver tube tightened and torqued to the vehicle's receiver hitch, go ahead and take our insert here. You'll notice that there's two different slots, one here and one here, that lines up with this hole, so it is adjustable.

You'll then take your pin and clip, after choosing which hole, go through, and then you'll clip it. When putting the insert into your receiver tube here, you want to make sure that the narrower, or shorter, side of the insert faces towards the rear of the vehicle. Now we'll go ahead and repeat the same process over on the driver's side. That's all there is to it to the installation of the TorkLift Custom Frame-Mounted Camper Tie-Downs for the rear of the vehicle, part number TLR3501, on our 1997 Ford F250 Heavy Duty. .

Great product, straight forward install. etrailer install video was very helpful.
Photo shows camper and truck before install.

Good fit. Well made

by: Kris 11/30/2021

Best product for overhead camper tie-downs period. Instructions could use a little more detail and/clearer picture, but installation was relatively easy and only took approx. 2hrs to install. Much more secure than bed/bumper or stake pocket type tie downs.

by: Jim09/12/2020

They are the only way to go. I've been hauling and using truck campers for over 40 years and can't imagine finding anything better. They are also a great anchor point to tie things down in the bed when the camper is off the truck. Buy them and you won't be disappointed.

by: Randell 10/18/2023

Is very well engineered.

by: Randy03/22/2021

Went on as instructed. A pain drilling holes but then again it was worth it for a quality tie-down. Love the way they look and the ease of attaching the extension.

by: David07/12/2022

They work great but after one year of use the paint is flaking. For nearly $XXX you would think they could get the powder coat right.

You mentioned that the paint was flaking on the tie downs. This can be common after a year depending on what road debris has hit it. We recommend touching it up with a rust resistant paint like Rustoleum to help protect it.

by: Keith 10/11/2021

Although I had my mechanic install them, he said they were relatively easy to install. They are a little spendy but the cabover has not blown off, yet!

by: Mike03/12/2019

did not fit my old hitch so i had to upgrade the hitch. worth it for product.

The units appeared to be well made and were nicely painted. I installed them on my F150. The tools and hardware supplied were of good quality and installation was straight forward. Two people would have been great, but I was able to install both sides in a little less than an hour. The holes all line up very well. I like these better than the previous units I had on my 2013, as they do not stick out as far - so less noticeable. The extension arms come out at a very nice angle just under the body. I find these units with quality I expected and I think they will be highly functional in attaching my camper.

by: Dot07/15/2022

I had the mountings professionally attached to the frame. The hatches can be easily removed when not in use( and I would recommend that to keep them from being stolen). Using chains and turnbuckles, I feel very comfortable with my truck camper staying where it is.. does not rock, very solid.
It’s nice to feel secure about my camper staying firmly attached.
It was worth the investment.

by: Mark06/05/2024

These tiedowns were great. They fit my 2023 ford f350 4wd crew cab perfectly. They bolted on using existing holes and they included wire feeders to feed the bolts through all the holes. Everything was included in the kit and installation was pretty simple. Probably took an hour or so. Directions were very good and easy to follow. They hold my camper down very securely and are adjustable for various widths. Also easy to drill different hokes for custom widths. I highly recommend this tie down for this model truck.

by: Matt 03/30/2023

They do exactly what you think they'd do. I actually had to swap them from one truck to another (went from an double cab to a crew cab) and TorkLift actually sent me a whole new hardware kit. The hardest part is fishing the bolt/nut setup on the driver's side as the gas can is in the way, other than that it's easy peasy.

by: Matt06/13/2024

One side fit perfect. Other side strait out of the box had a huge booger weld on the back that made it not fit. Ground the boogers off so it would sit flush and then the bolt holes don't line up. Never mind that the website said free delivery in 3 days when I placed the order. Next morning shipping pushed another day. Then the next push another day. Ended up taking 8 days for them to arrive. When I called about it no replacement brackets available for 3 weeks.

by: Mark06/05/2024

These tiedowns were exactly as advertised and fit my 2023 f350 4wd crew cab perfectly using preexisting holes and mounts. They even came with wire feeders to feed the bolts through the holes on the frame. Instructions were very good and easy to follow. Can adjust the width of tie down and can also drill new holes to customize the width. I highly recommend these.

by: Charles 12/21/2022

A little tougher to install than the front ones but not too bad. Torklift tie downs are very well made, tried he bumper attached one but I guess bumpers aren't what they used to be I saw bending at the tie down after one trip. So bought these. Entrailer as usual priced well and fast shipping.
