It's a very wise idea to invest in toppers that will protect your slide-out and all of its hardware while the slide is extended. A good rule of thumb with every topper is to have a few inches on either side covered as well as the slide-out itself, as long as there isn't some sort of clearance issue with another constructed part of the camper's exterior.
