The first thing to do is figure out if the problem is on your tow vehicle or your trailer. To test this you'll simply need to use a circuit tester # PTW2992 and check the various pin locations for function. For a connector that has both a 4-Way and 7-Way, like the # ETBC7, it would be best to check both connectors so you know if it's that circuit or just that connector. Sounds like your Trooper has separate turn signals from the brake lights and what you are trying to do is wire up a trailer connector that is designed for combined circuits. This is a fairly common problem and the solution is to wire in a signal converter like part # RM-732.

ER is not one of the display messages covered by the troubleshooting chart in the instructions for the Primus # TK90160 which I have linked to the right for you. Because you are seeing ER that is a good indication that there is a major internal problem and the controller will need to be replaced which is the case with other Tekonsha controllers that display ER.
