In a light-duty towing application like yours, to be perfectly honest, if it were my money I would choose the lowest cost hitch for whichever car you choose to equip with a hitch. All have identical capacities.

In terms of carrying capacity the Thule Canyon XT Roof Cargo Basket # TH859XT-8591XT beats the Malone Katahdin since the Thule basket/extension measures 69 x 40-inches as compared to the Malone which measures 61 x 38-inches. Despite its larger size the Thule Canyon with the extension piece actually weighs about one pound less than the Katahdin.

The 2" EcoHitch # 306-X7284 for your 2014 VW Jetta SportWagen Diesel takes much longer to install than the 1-1/4" Draw-Tite # 24880 for your 2017 VW Passat 1.08T SE. From what I could find it looks like the Passat tends to have a hitch receiver that sits 3/4" higher on average than the SportWagen so if that's a determining factor then I'd say go with the Passat.
