The intent is to reduce the amount of contaminants released when the engine is running. Since the exhaust system is part of the overall tuning of the vehicle, if it were removed it would or could have a negative effect on the performance of the engine. Of the two boxes you're looking at, I would get the Thule Force XT # TH6356B because it looks better in my opinion. Comparing it to the Yakima RocketBox # Y07192 it's actually almost an inch taller so the Thule option is not anymore low profile than the Yakima option. It may seem that way but they are 16-3/4" tall and 16" tall respectively. Both will work with your square bars and both are around the same weight but the lighter one is the Thule option. That's what I would go for forsure!
