Both RF- and wired-type proportional Prodigy brake controllers use an accelerometer to detect braking in the tow vehicle in order to send a proportional brake signal to the trailer brakes. Performance wise they would be identical.
The P2 does have to be mounted facing a certain direction so that it can properly sense decoration though so you would need to consider that as well.

The best brake controller to get if you don't want something taking up space in your wife's SUV is the Curt Echo, part # C51180. The only thing that'll be inside the vehicle is your smartphone or tablet that the Echo pairs to. It plugs into your 7-way and then communicates with your device which acts as the in-cab controller.

Typically most trailer hitches that fit on the same vehicle will have only subtle differences, like whether or not the cross tube is round or square, or whether the cross tube is concealed behind the bumper or not.
