Yes, it does sound like the issue is on your 2019 Volkswagen Atlas but I do recommend checking your Tekonsha Plug-In Wiring Adapter # TK22FR is wired correctly. This could cause the issue you are getting with the Tekonsha Prodigy P3 # 90195 as well. You can see where the wiring goes into the connectors on the product page. I checked with Thule and the Thule Sidekick item # TH78GC is not compatible with the T-Track Adapter for Thule Cargo Boxes item # TH27PQ. It fits only the cargo boxes with the PowerClick attachment points.
The T-Track adapter would not be a better option, over the included hardware, to mount the Sidekick on the Malone AirFlow2 Roof Rack item # MPG216. It to me sounds like an internal problem. But I would first check to make sure the wiring on the 7-way of your vehicle and trailer doesn't have a short from exposed wire.
