An example of sag on a vehicle's rear axle under a heavy load

Whether you're hauling heavy loads in your bed or cargo area or you're towing a trailer, you will often see the rear of your vehicle sag while the front end rises. In these cases, the rear axle is handling not only the weight of the cargo, but also more of the vehicle's weight. Because less weight is on the front axle, the front tires are making less contact with the road. Overall handling - traction, steering, and braking - is negatively affected. But the resistance from Timbren's Suspension Enhancement System works with your factory suspension to keep your vehicle level and improve your driving experience.

Diagram of the Timbren spring installed

The Timbren system comes with custom-fit brackets that are bolted onto each frame rail above the rear axle. Hollow rubber springs are bolted to the bottom of the bracket and hang down to where the bottom of the spring sits, 1" above the axle. The inch of clearance allows the existing factory suspension to operate normally under light loads and standard terrain, ensuring the smooth, comfortable ride that you are used to.

Animation of a standard Timbren rubber spring

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Systems are designed to work progressively. When the hollow rubber springs are compressed, the convoluted design causes them to quickly collapse along the folds. Once the folds are compacted, the stacked barrel shape increases resistance, stiffening the suspension and keeping your vehicle level.

Timbren suspension system works to prevent body roll

Each hollow rubber spring works independently to support the driver's side or passenger's side of your vehicle. This is helpful when you swerve or make sharp turns. Each spring is activated when it is needed, so body roll is greatly reduced. The independent action also works well when you are hauling off-center loads.

An example of a trailers swaying

Because the vehicle handles better with the springs, less turbulence will be passed along to the trailer, and this helps to keep the trailer in line. Your driving comfort is further enhanced if the trailer does begin to sway (from a gust of wind or a passing semi), because the movement from the trailer is not transferred to your vehicle. This also works to make the sway subside more quickly.

An empty truck on a bumpy road without Timbren

Another great feature of the rubber construction is that the springs absorb most of the road shock, creating a smoother, more stable ride overall. Wear and tear on the factory suspension is also lessened because the rubber springs work to prevent bottoming out on rough roads.

Timbren Suspension Enhancement Compared to the Competition

Timbren's Suspension Enhancement Systems are much easier to install than air springs - there are no air hoses to run, no compressors or gauges to hook up, and no manual adjustments to make. The rubber construction makes Timbren's springs more elastic than similar products constructed of microcellular urethane. And more elasticity allows for a more comfortable ride because the rubber has more travel.

Video Transcript for Review of Timbren Vehicle Suspension - Rear Axle Suspension Enhancement - T65MR

Hello everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Timbren Severe Service Rear Suspension Enhancement System. Now, this is a custom fit part, it is designed to fit the 2022 Toyota Tundra trucks. And on a custom fit part, what I like to recommend for you is to go to our website, use the fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show you if this will work for your application. Now, this kit here will improve the suspension, the handling, and safety on your vehicle, and this is a severe service kit, and they're recommended when using like a slide-in camper or a salt spreader on your vehicle. Any application that'll require maximum stability, meaning reducing roll and sway, calls for a severe service upgrade.

And most rubber springs used on pickup trucks are double convoluted design, provides a perfect blend of capacity and ride quality, but these rubber springs that are used on the severe service, as you can see, they are a single convoluted design. Basically, the single convoluted springs are shorter and wider, and they're designed to resist weight more aggressively, and the result is reduced ride quality in exchange for more stability. Now, these do work independently side to side, these will help compensate for off-center loads. They do reduce body roll and swerving in turning corners. What's also nice is these do act as shock absorbers, taking the brunt of any bumps and rough roads, which will help extend the life in your vehicle suspension.

This part will include everything shown here, it includes the two Aeon rubber springs, these vehicle specific mounting brackets, and the hardware for its simple installation. And these do install directly onto your frame, they replace the bump stop, there's no drilling required. Does come with a nice set of instructions that'll describe how it goes together. Few specs on this, the capacity is 7,000 pounds. Now, one thing I do wanna mention is even though you're increasing the spring rate by adding this upgrade, this does not increase your gross vehicle weight rating of the vehicle, so you still wanna make sure not to exceed the manufacturer's recommended weight limit.

And also, this is designed to work with a suspension system that is in good working order. But that should do it for the review on this Timbren Severe Service Rear Suspension Enhancement System..

There are 1” gap after installing new timbres
Truck
driving normal when not load on it
When loaf camper on no sag at on

by:

Passive overload protection at a great price and significantly less installation cost than a air shock system with stemmed lines to inflate and deflate.

by:

Truck did not squat as much and was a MUCH smoother ride. This product was amazing.

by:

The suspension kits look great and was a easy installation

by:

I know it will be lovely when loaded or the trailer on. However,it rides like a wagon empty with brand new premium shocks and struts empty. Thud thud thud. You really cannot feel the shocks or suspension. Found exact same item plentiful for 60 bucks on eBay after I bought these for 250. I may cut these in half or put air bag on. I do not like the ride empty. No hard feelings. It is a good product maybe just not for me.

by:

About a 1/2 inch difference in gap at the bump stop perch but still within parameters. Truck sits perfect with trailer attached. Haven’t towed yet. After towing if they perform like they should will upgrade to a 5 star. Easy to install, definitely needed 2x4 and jack. 2011 Silverado ext cab with 30 ft Genisis 5th wheel.

by:

Was able to install these with a 15mm flex head ratchet wrench and lifted the rear of the truck to make it easier. 30 minutes to take off 4 nuts and put em back on. 2 minutes assembling the timbrens with the added spacer. I have a f350 with a salter and plow. Loaded with salt the lights shoot up and in the snow ?? it’s like hitting hyper drive and you’re blinded. These helped big time. Very happy so far.

by:

Haven’t had it on long, but so far so good. 1999 F350 dually. Bolted up nicely. Total job took 10 minutes. Have hauled two gooseneck loads of hay and truck drives SO much better. Nice and level. Money well spent so far.

by:

The pro: The longer, heavier bump stops worked great when hauling my mustang home from Chicago. The truck stayed level and handled great.
The con: I had to remove the bump stops for everyday use. They limited my suspension travel causing a stiffer ride.

by:

I am so glad I bought these for my truck. I was able to install them myself using a jack and jackstands. The ride is bit rougher now; but the suspension is totally awesome compared to before. I am able to haul a bit more weight when needed.

by:

very good product ,received just in time and fit perfectly on my GMC savana 2000 .Be sure to clean the two receptacle thats help.
très bon produit , reçu dans les délais et s'ajuste parfaitement . Assurez-vous de nettoyer le receptacle cela facilite l'installation.

by:

The timbrens actually did what they were suppose to do. However, once I starter driving out west I notice the timbrens were riding on the axle which cause the speedometer to jump around depending on the road. I would recommend them if you are hauling or towing a camper or RV. I was going to contact etrailer about maybe removing a spacer for one set however the other set came as one unit. The bottom line is the Timbrens does stabilize your load for safe travels. I will be contacting etrailer soon to assist in correcting the problem...Road trip from Idaho,Colorado,Wyoming, and Utah were beautiful... Thank you etrailer

by:

Definitely a must have when towing..stiff without a load but night and day difference while towing my travel trailer, better traction, steering and braking. Easy quick install..only issue I had was with the long bolts they sent with the spacer kit (optional for lift) the bolt diameter was too wide to fit through the holes on the bracket..but a trip to the local hardware store took care of that.

by:

Pros: Cheaper and easier to install than airbags, do the job when load is enough to compress the shock, with added weight or towing, then it stiffens the rear very nicely.
Cons: Doesn't do anything until there is 2-3cm of compressed shock. It sits above the contact point, doesn't touch. Under normal driving, there is no benefit/improved stiffness/anti sway in rear or a leveling of the factory rear sag in a 2022 or newer Toyota Tundra.
If had it to do over, would have put some kind of spacer in between product and upper included bracket, the supplied bolt is long enough to accommodate, to eliminate the gap, and lift the rear 1-2 cm. Should do it anyway, maybe when swapping to summer wheels next month.

I’d seen similar products rated in the 4,000 lb ratings but I went with these. I’m not a mechanic but I removed the factory bump stops and installed both these in 30 minutes or less. I used my rolling jack and lifted from the drop hitch and easily removed the old ones and soapy water and 1/4 twist and these were on. Placed a block of wood in the space between these coils and lowered the jacks then pressed it with my tractor to confirm full engagement. I carry a lot of tools on a 2020 Chevy 2500 I do feel a bit of butt bounce on large bumps but other than that I’m very pleased.

by:

The order with Will at etrailer was great. He was very helpful and knowledgeable, Installation was not easy but not too bad, The hardest part was removing the factory pieces I removed them from below which was a blind nut removal operation. This is on a 2017 Mercedes Sprinter motorhome. After removal of the factory pieces I discovered that access is much easier on top between the tire and the mud flap, I turned the front wheels inward and they didn't have to be removed. The front of the motorhome had to be raised quite a bit to get the Timbren piece jnserted. Also I learned to tighten the bolt and nut in the Timbren bumper as much as possible before installation because there is no access to the bolt head when tightening the top nut to keep the bolt from turning, preventing tightening the nut.

by:

First off the product was beat up with paint/power coating missing in several places on both. I was putting on a brand new truck with less than 800 miles on it so I elected to touch up before install. I’ve hear a lot about Timbren but never had them. I had airbags on my F350 but when I switched to a new Tundra I went with Timbrens. I’m a bit disappointed in the ride. Feels like I can feel a “bump” in the truck from the rubber pick hitting the axle when I go on a bumpy road. Thinking I should have went with airbags. As far as having a load on the truck and helping with the squat, they do as they are advertised.

by:

These work great for giving you a solid towing experience when loaded heavy; however, when driving empty you definitely get the jounce bumper “into the air” experience when driving on moderate to rough roads. I have the recommended gap installed between the axle and the timbrens, but with terrible midwest roads and highways it doesn’t seem to be enough gap. Smooth roads it rides great. It’s driving 80mph on the expressway and hitting potholes or large cracks where these will hit causing uncomfortable harsh ride.

I’ve resorted to installing and then subsequently removing these anytime I use my travel trailer for longer trips (30minute removal time). I tow a 7000lb loaded travel trailer with an f150 and just needed something to make the soft half ton suspension from porpoising too much on bad-roads. Mission accomplished when towing as I said these things work great for heavy loads. It almost rides better with heavy loads…. I was going to give airbags a try but the reviews from others have scared me from those because even with airbags at the lowest setting you still get the jouncing on bumpy roads.

by:

Easy install took about 20 minutes on my 2017 Ram 3500 SRW. Had about 1/2 inch clearance as recommended. Loaded up my 5th wheel (2350 hitch weight) and about 200 lbs of gear in the bed. Just got back from a 800 mile camping trip through mountains of TN. You can really feel the difference around those sharp corners and uneven surfaces. The truck felt firm and controlled not hard and jarring as some have mentioned. Going over those overpasses with the wonderfully smooth (Not) joists was greatly improved. The truck would squat and rebound again, with a firm controlled response. Driving without a load felt the same as before without them. I would highly recommend these! Ordering from etrailer continues to be my go to option!

by:

So just got them installed today 3/27/24 haven't hooked up the 5th wheel yet but will be this weekend so we'll find out if they are good as everyone claims they are fingers crossed. Install was crazy simple took about 30min(had to find a wrench) have about 1/2in gap between the axle, really excited to test them. Will update the review after this weekend.

by:

Installed these Timbrens on my 2016 F350 to enhance the stability of my truck for a slide in truck camper. Have loved the results of them. They have noticeably helped leveling the truck/camper combo, and sway while driving. When the camper is off the truck these are not engaged. Have had no issues and would recommend them.

by:

The Timbren rear bump stops for 2020 Suburban were great quality and fit perfectly in the replacement of the original ones with no problems. The old ones pulled right out by hand with no hassle. When I installed the new ones I put 2x4 blocks that I cut underneath the bump stops. Then hooked up the 6,400 lbs travel trailer with about 750 lbs of tongue weight on it and they pressed right into place. The Suburban was more stable because it had less swaying while towing. I also gained about 1 inche more in the fender gap which means less rearend saging.

by:

ordered over the phone and got a very nice lady that was very helpful. was feeling like crap so took a few days to open box up and found out only half was there no bolts only one top mounting piece and only one rubber spring part. but i got two big rubber washer things

by:

So far soo good. Very easy to install on my 04 Nissan Titan. Took a little over two hours total to assemble all the tools lift the truck, set up my pneumatic tools, remove old bumppad and install new spring helpers. Hauled my first load of 2700 pounds of gravel. Much improved ride and vehicle control compared with stock suspension. Also rear end was atleast 3 inches higher than stock

by:

Works great, even with worn-out shocks and springs.

  • Suspension Enhancement Kit for 2024 Toyota Tundra With Factory Lift
Hey Mark, I recommend going with the kit you looked at, which is Timbren Suspension Enhancement System - Rear Axle # T45MR along with Spacer Kit # T68MR. If you had a camper on the bed, or had the rear end maxed out all the time, then I'd recommend the Severe Duty Kit # T65MR, but I doubt you need that. If you used it and didn't actually need that much support, then your truck would suffer from a rough ride all the time.
