Hi everyone. Aiden here with etrailer. Today we're gonna be taking a look at the Yakima Gatekeeper. This is gonna be a tailgate pad on our 2019 Ford Ranger. Now a tailgate pad's a great way to transport bikes to wherever you need to go. And comparing this to a hitch mounted bike rack typically you can get more bikes loaded up on a tailgate pad.
This one has a capacity of up to five bikes and they're gonna be way more cost effective than a hitch mounted bike rack. And aside from that, maybe you have something in your hitch already, you've got a camper or a trailer and putting a hitch mounted rack just isn't an option. That's where a tailgate pad can come in really handy. It's gonna get a pretty good hold on the bike here. You can see there's relatively little movement back and forth.
Everything's strapped in with this strap over the frame and there's plenty of padding around it so it's not gonna damage our frame. Now all you gotta do to get this unloaded is just loosen up that strap and unhook it pretty straightforward and simple. And then to get it out of the bed, just lift it up and away. That's one thing with tailgate pads that some people aren't huge fans of is the fact that you do have to lift your bike up and overhead depending on the weight of your bikes, your own height and maybe your truck has a lift kit, that all things that can factor into how difficult that's gonna be for you. So for me, on this particular truck, it's not bad.
And I think this is probably a great option. I always like to replace that strap to make sure it doesn't go anywhere. I just don't like anything loose flapping around like that. And if we wanna leave this on between rides we don't have to sacrifice any sort of functionality of the truck. We can still use our tailgate.
We've got a hook and loop strap and some buttons that hold that flap down and keep this covered up. But we can open it up to access the handle for our tailgate and open it all like that. So if we need access to the truck bed, we can get it. One thing I will point out though, that's pretty unique to the Ford Ranger here is that your backup camera located right here underneath by the Ford logo, is pretty much completely blocked. Now a lot of times trucks will have that backup camera by the handle or around it. So tailgate pads, when you have the flap open you can use the backup camera, but with this it pretty much perfectly blocks the backup camera. So if you wanna leave this on, that is going to be blocked. And pretty much for any other tailgate pad out there it's gonna be the same case. So just be mindful of that and be aware of that. If you are looking into this option. Now, I'll go ahead and close this up and around the backside we do have a small metal loop here that we can run a cable lock through. So if we wanna lock up our bikes we can run something through here and through the frames of the bikes to add an extra little bit of security. It's certainly not the most secure thing in the world but it definitely helps as a theft deterrent. You will notice on our truck today we do have a tunnel cover and this fits just fine around it. There are some small cutouts right around the edge here to help it fit around those rails for the tunnel cover. But just in general with this midsize truck pad it really doesn't come close to it at all. So we haven't had any sort of fitment issues. The gatekeeper here does come in this blue color like you see, but it also comes in a plain black if you prefer that style. Each one's gonna function the exact same way. It really just comes down to the looks. Now if you're thinking about a tailgate pad another one I'd maybe look into is the Swagman Paramount. That one's gonna pretty much function the same way but it's gonna have some extra padding out front to protect your bike and the tailgate a little bit more and it kinda holds the bike in place a bit better. It'll have a buckle around back for this flap to help hold it open when it's open and around back there's mesh pockets, so if we wanna leave our bike shoes, sunscreen, helmet anything else back there with our bikes, we can. And it's all stored together in the truck bed. Whichever way you go though I think it's gonna be a really great fit for the Ranger. Our bikes fit in here just fine with no issues even with the title cover and a tailgate pad's gonna get your bikes to where they need to go. Thanks for watching..

Tailgate pad converts your tailgate into an easy-to-use 5-bike rack. Integrated bike cradles and closure straps keep your bikes stable and secure. Tuck-away flap provides access to tailgate or rearview camera. Attaches to tailgate with straps.Great shopping experience (much more straightforward than amazon), product exactly as expected. Based purchase on very helpful etrailer [online] video.
Fits perfectly. Looks and works great.
Perfect for hauling around my bikes. Super easy to setup on my 2020 Chevy Colorado.
The concept is good and the materials seem fine. The wheels ocme off with the design for attaching it to the tailgate (moves around) and managing the flap. I'm not even sure why there's a flap (useless). The straps/buckles for attaching the bikes are not the best choices.
Simple, affordable, gets the job done. I would recommend this to anyone with a pickup truck who wants to take bikes with them.
I love shopping at etrailer.com. They seem to test their products and make sure they are compatible with my exact year of truck. I purchased a tailgate pad from Yakima. This is the second one I bought. the first one was from cyclingdeals that I bought from [online vendor] and After doing lots of research I thought it would work with my back up camera. Well once I received it I learned that it wouldn’t work with my back up camera. I returned it and started googling again. etrailer.com came up with a pad that they said would fit my truck and work with my backup camera. I ordered it, tried it out and it works great. thank you etrailer.com.
I purchased this Yakima gatekeeper due to the large flap that allows access to the tailgate handle and rear camera. Bike straps are solid and the little extra padding for the downtube is nice.
2017 F250
We hav a Ford F150 quad cab.
This gatekeeper fits perfect.
It does take 2 of us to maneuver the gatekeeper and the tailgate to get the middle strap attached but we love the product. We’ll figure out a way, I’m sure, to do this solo.
Highly recommend.
Very rugged product and well not scratch your tailgate!!! Holds 1 or 6 bikes with ease!!
Right product delivered ahead of schedule during the holiday ordering season. Couldn't be happier with the product and service. Outstanding!
Yakima GateKeeper Tailgate Pad - timely service/shipping and product is excellent-- far better than my bike rack that mounted in the truck bed between the bed rails--securing the bikes is now a 3 minute effort and no climbing into the truck
Fits perfectly on my 2500HD. Looks nice and works great. First impression is it's high quality and will hold up well.
To me it was average after 1 year, which I feel is a better review of an item anyway. Withen 1 or 2 weeks of having it , one of the plastic rings holding the straps broke. etrailer was very good at wanting to replace it, but ,I didn't feel like sending it back( one thing the box it came in was huge), which is on me. I could fix it myself.
It held 2 of my wifes bikes , and one of mine which way over 28 lbs. each. I purchased a carbon bike about a year agoand it always falls to the side when strapped in . I've bunge corded to help that out, it still doesn't hold it tight. I even tried old wash rags around straps, but to no avail.
After 1 year the velcro is still good, but where it attaches to the strap is worn and is very hard to keep tight, we've only use it everyother weekend and never when the temp goes under 45 degrees.
the material it's made of is still in very good shape. The only other con is it would be nice if the flap coud be velcrod open so you can see out of the backing camera
The Yakima GateKeeper Tailgate Pad works great. It's easy to put on and take off as needed and protects the tailgate and bikes we carry. Perflect for an old Ranger or hopefully soon the a new Maverick.
THIS YAKIMA TAILGATE BIKE CARRIER IS
VERY WELL MADE. THE CRADLES TO SET
YOUR FRAME IN ARE NICELY PADDED. THE
VELCRO STRAPS KEEP THEM SECURE DURING
TRANSPORT. THIS IS GREAT PRODUCT.
ETRAILER ALWAYS HAS THE BEST PRICES
AND SERVICE. THANKS ETRAILER!
The cradle straps do not have enough flexibility to provide a secure tight fit for smaller diameter framed road and hybrid type bikes. Just a poor design of the straps as there is only about half inch of the velcro actually securing the strap when fully tightened while the remaining velcro (over an inch) not making any contact. Product is really only for larger tubed bikes such as mountain bikes and child bikes. My bikes would be more secure just laying them down in the bed of the truck with a couple bungee cords.
Works great. Very convenient. Leaves a good amount of bed space for other items like camping equipment etc. Easy tailgate access to the Tundra through the handle access flap. Would definitely recommend.
Easy to put on and take off the tailgate. Keeps bikes completely secure.
With a little tuck you can even still use the reverse camera!
The Gatekeeper has performed as expected in a 2017 Ram 2500. 5 Stars always goes to etrailer. They are an outstanding company that always exceeds expectations with customer service.
its a quality made product, but doesn't fit a 2017 RAM tailgate very well. A RAM tailgate is wider in the middle which causes the tailgate cover to have a big wrinkle on either side of center caused by the cover being tighter on the ends than in the middle where the tailgate is wider. My bikes didn't sit very well on the tailgate, I believe mostly because of the wide RAM tailgate. I tried on the outside and in the middle, which didn't make a difference.
Great bike carrier! We carry 4 bikes and this keeps them secure even on dirt and bumpy roads. It takes a few minutes to get it on the tailgate correctly, but once on it works great!
We ordered for a family vacation where we pull a travel trailer with our pickup and needed a place for all the bikes. It works really well and kept all bikes stable and with no damage over a very long trip. Great product!
