Video Transcript for Rhino Rack Roof Rack Review - 2015 Kia Sportage

Speaker 1: Today on our 2015 Kia Sportage we'll be taking a look at and showing you how to install Rhino Rack Roof Rack Kit. This is going to consist of the Rhino Rack Vortex Aero Crossbars, part number RRVA126B-2, the 2500 Series Legs, part number RRRLKVA, and our fit kit for our Sportage, part number DK259. Now keep in mind that our crossbars are also available in silver, part number RRVA126S-2.The Rhino Rack Roof Rack System is a great solution for carrying your vehicle accessories on your roof, whether those are bike racks, ski and snowboard carrier, or cargo baskets. It's going to allow you to free up space inside your vehicle for more gear or more passengers. The aerodynamic shape of our crossbars is going to help to reduce wind noise and drag, and that weather strip on the inside is going to help along with that as well.If we remove our end cap you'll see that our weather strip is easy to remove and we can cut it down and place in channel mounted accessories. Unlike some other roof rack systems our end cap does have the option to lock this in place with our plastic lock core, which will help to prevent theft and tampering of any channel mounted accessories.

We can also replace that plastic lock core with a metal one. The end caps for our leg kit is going to allow us to prevent any theft or tampering of our roof rack system all together. It does lock into place, and it's going to protect our fit kit.Our fit kit is going to consist of our clamp as well as our pad. Any portion that touches our vehicle is going to have a rubber coating to prevent any scratches or abrasions, and it's going to be custom cut to fit our vehicle. This will give us a nice secure fit overall, and we won't have to worry about having to readjust our roof rack system if it moves.

The Rhino Rack Vortex roof rack system has a 165 pound weight capacity, though you do want to double check your vehicle's owner's manual to make sure your roof can withstand that much weight. It's also going to come with a limited lifetime warranty, and be quick and easy to install. We'll show you how to do that now. Now everything that you see on our table is what we will need to install our roof rack system. We already have our front bar in place, we're going to show you our back bar. The only thing we've provided ourselves is a flat tape measure to measure everything out.

We're going to have our included tool to tighten everything down, as well as our end caps for our legs. The key to lock our end cap for our cross bar, and the keys for our end caps for our legs, our end cap for our cross bars, the legs themselves, and then our fit kit which will include our pad as well as our clamp to secure everything to our roof. We'll start by taking our leg, and we're going to remove our bolt here in the center. Once we have that completely removed we can take our clamp and place it over where we just removed our bolt, and we'll tighten our bolt back down. We want to tighten this down just enough so that it holds our clamp into place, so then we can still adjust it around our roof. Then we'll flip our leg kit over and we'll take off the bottom piece.

We want to make sure that the arrow on the foot is facing towards the rear of our vehicle when we place it on. The arrow on the plastic part of our foot is going to face out, away from the inside of our cross bar.So we'll seal that together, making sure that all the holes are completely closed. Then we can place this onto our leg, and we'll place this onto our cross bar. We want to line up our nut on the bottom with our channel, slide that into place. Now I like to tighten it up just a bit so that my leg sits up straight. Now we'll measure out this insert area. We do have inserts that have measurements on them. This will be great if we want to reduce that wind noise and drag, we can place in inserts and cut them down, placing them on the outside and inside channel. But for demonstration purposes we're just going to use our flat tape measure and measure this out to 17.6 centimeters. All the measurements and the placement for each pad, as well as your clamp, will be in your instructions. Once we have that in place we can take our included tool and tighten that bolt down all the way. We'll finish off by placing on our cross bar end cap. Place it on, use our key, and lock it in place. Then we can take our cross bar, making sure that our pad's arrows are facing towards the rear. We want our clamp to sit around our doorjamb. Now we'll measure out our cross bar spread. This is going to be between the middle of the front clamp to the middle of the back. We want to make sure that it reads as the same measurement on each side. Now we'll tighten down our clamps. We're going to take our included tool and tighten down the bolt.I'll start by tightening it down so that my clamp sits just up against our doorjamb, and then we'll do the same thing to the other side. Once they're both even we'll go back and forth between each side, tightening them down evenly until we have a nice, secure fit. Now we'll know we have enough torque behind our bolt when the skinnier portion of our torque tool is completely straight, just like so. Now we can close up our vehicle doors and we'll finish off by placing on our end caps. Make sure we lock our end caps in place, and that's going to help to prevent theft and tampering of our entire roof rack system. Now we're ready to load up our gear and hit the road. That's going to be our completed look at the Rhino Rack roof rack system on our 2015 Kia Sportage.

The kit came as 3 separate boxes at different times instead of putting them all into 1 box which would have been awesome.
Installation was tough bc it kind of requires 2 people so you're not having to run back and forth while adjusting things. The design kind of sucks too bc you put the crossbars and everything together before mounting on your vehicle and than if it doesn't line up right on your roof you have to take it off and loosen that bolt that's underneath holding the crossbar on.

Picked up the fit kit and vortex 2500 aero bars from etrailer. Added them to a Rhino Rack leg kit I got and everything went on perfectly. Can’t believe how solid the whole system feels. I have a box to put on the rack that will carry all my golf gear and hiking equipment for a three week tour of Utah and Colorado. Looking forward to traveling and actually having room inside the car to find things.
Thanks etrailer for the Awesome service (Noah was great) and the super fast shipping. I’ll be back when I need accessories.

I received my all the parts for my roof rack installation to a bare roof. I quickly read through the instructions, identified all the parts, and started putting it together. It wasn't long and the installation was complete. The instructions were easy to understand and the product seems very durable.

by:

This rack is very well made and easy to install. I was a little hesitant at first because of the price but you really get what you pay for. I load two 12' kayaks that take this rack close to it's weight limit and it's still rock solid.

by:

We purchased these with the crossbars and have been completely happy with them. We put a car top carrier on top and have had zero problems. The assembly was explained well and quick to do. Would recommend these to anyone who needs to post-factory bars on top of the car. We put them on a Kia Sportage and it looks great. We take it through the car wash often and haven't had any problems.

Great product, came as described and works great. You can't beat the price..

Easy to install, easy to use!

Holds up well. No issues.

Thank you

This was a great purchase. I originally ordered roof crossbars from somewhere else and immediately returned them. They were a universal fit and were not secure at all when they were tightened down. They were from a third seller on Amazon. I found these on etrailer and I am glad that I made the purchase. I did not want to spend the money at first that these cost, but am glad that I did. The install was easy and the crossbars are very secure and hold up well with the cargo basket installed. They were well worth the money. Can't wait to try them out when we go camping. Thank you etrailer.

by:

Ease of order, receipt, installation and excellent customer service is what I received in this order.
Thank you, e-trailer!

I've been using my Rhino-Rack primarily for hauling up to two kayaks. It has performed very. On the particular trip we are on now we went thru some pretty high winds blowing from the side of our rig and the kayak stayed secured. I would highly recommend this for anything you want to carry on top of your vehicle.

by:

Takes a little while to assemble the rack bars.
The stickers are great I can mark the positions after measuring the distance between the bars.
One of the screws is underneath the bar; it is hard to reach to tighten the bars.
Finally, I got the roof rack installed and it looks good.

by:

Pretty nice rack system. Held up to my 90lb canoe no problem. However a piece did fly off on the highway and the "locking" bar end cap can pull off super easy.
The directions were ok. There is some stuff you have to kind of figure out for yourself, mainly the roof trim. I plan to leave the rack on so I drilled theough the trim

by:

Just followed all the etrailer website prompts for my naked roof Toyota Matrix and it set me up with the three packages needed- rails legs and fitkit. Installed easily enough. I like the little arrow stickers hidden in the door jams for fast re-install later. Held two 10’ kayaks on a 2 hr journey with ease.

by:

This is a perfect fit for our 2015 Prius V with "naked" roof. Instructions were clear and accurate, and the bars are solid and able to support our canoe and kayak easily. We added the air deflector, as there was a bit of wind noise, but now there is none. Great product at much lower price than the big names.

by:

Absolutely love the Rhino Rack. Easy to install (watch the [online] video). Looks GREAT. Hauls my kayaks no problem. Very well made and I highly recommend this product.

by:

The Rhino 2500 series is well built. The etrailer customer service person Trevor W. was great. He was so helpful in getting the right components for my Rhino 2500 roof rack to mount to my 2010 Silverado. Thanks for the help Trevor.

This was the kit for my 2020 equinox. The spacing of the feet on the vortex aero bars was incorrect I had to use the Euro sizes. Went back and forth with customer service trying to get confirmation that was the right size but it never was confirmed. Everything is installed now and sturdy.

by:

Installed this and 65" Vortex Areo crossbars on a 2015 RAM 5500 chassis cab/crew cab. It is listed to fit 1500 to 3500 RAM's and neither Rhino-Rack or etrailer would confirm it would fit the 5500. My research suggested there was not much, if any difference, between the 3500 and 5500 crew cab, so ordered it any way. Installation was relatively easy, fit seemed to be good and have made multiple 200-300 mile trips with a 75lb kayak. Good price, great customer service and fast delivery through etrailer.

by:

Seemed to work well with my 2012 Kia Soul. I have only had it on my car for a day at writing this so I can't really give it five stars. I would bump it up to five stars once its been on for a few months. Easy to install, and after doing a bit of research Etrailer.com Had the best deal, and support for installation.

by:

Once installed the product is very sturdy and looks great. But the directions are hard to follow because of the separate components and would have been really tough without the video which was great. I have one problem, how can I eliminate the annoying wind sound when driving when nothing on the rack. I saw a video where wrapping a line around the crossbar can help. It has helped a lot but not completely. Is there another secret for this?

by:

Customer support was great. After reading the instructions and watching the video on how to install the Rhino Rack installation went well. The ski rack has one draw back, if you leave car out over night with skis locked in the ski rack, every thing can be easily stolen. All you need is an Allen wrench to remove the ski rack with the skis. The roof rack has locking covers the prevent theft of the roof rack. The ski rack can be easily removed from the roof rack.

This review covers the Rhino Rack 2500 Vortex Aero crossbars and associated parts (DK284, RRRLKVA, RRVA137S-2) for a naked roof installation on a 2018 Honda CR-V.

Very solid racks. We just took our first trip using them and the didn't budge. As recommended, a few days after installing, I tightened the bolts a bit. I'm not sure they needed it--just a little insurance.

The installation process was clear, but fairly detailed. It would be easy to miss a step, so take your time. Also, I tried a couple shortcuts in the order when installing on the car, but had to back track. So, go in the order they give you.

The racks easily supported our filled "pod" and a couple surfboards, strapped side-by-side. Sorry, no photos of the rack loaded. One thing to watch out for is that our old Thule pod almost didn't fit because of the thickness of the racks. I had to loosen the bolts almost entirely.

Of note: I feel that although I followed the measurements to the millimeter, the fit on our 2018 Honda CR-V wasn't exact. Where the pads sit on the roof of the car didn't align perfectly. I could have adjusted this by just re-trimming the rubber pads that go in the channels, but it's not a big deal, so I just left it.

Finally, I do have one concern. The angle of final installation doesn't really protect the racks from theft very well. The plastic plate that locks over the screw would allow someone with the proper tool to get up under it and loosen the bolts. That being said, someone so inclined could also just break the little plastic door or drill a hole in it to access the bolt. So, I guess it's just a deterrent anyway.

Overall, I'm very happy with the racks and etrailer.com! Despite shipping delays due to Covid-19, they were able to get the racks to me in time for an upcoming trip. I did choose to expedite shipping, but the cost was very reasonable.

I bought the roof rack to carry kayaks back and forth from Pennsylvania to Florida. The rack is solid and performs that task very well. My plan was to take the rack off and on but I decided to just leave it on. I do notice some wind noise since I've added the rack but it does not distract me and I would say that it is not excessive but it is noticeable.
I did have problems during the installation. I mounted the racks on a Ford 250 super duty. And the instructions were very clear as to where the feet that's support the rack where to be installed. Plastic strips are cut and the feet that support the rack on the roof push up to the cut plastic strips and that is what determines placement. I read the instructions several times and had seen an installation on another truck owned by a friend of mine. When I pushed the feet to the proper position I could not attached the clamps from the rack feet to the rain gutter on the truck which holds the whole assembly on the roof. They were too short. I spoke to Etrailer and a consensus was that I had cut the strips correctly. Etrailer's input of course was over the phone and they could not actually see or measure anything that I did. Nevertheless, in order to install the rack I had to move the feet on each side a bit closer to the rain gutter on the truck. I did not think that this would make any difference and based on the performance I have not noticed any problems. I would have given this product and excellent rating if I did not have to deal with the little problem that I had with the fit. As I said I have not taken it off the roof and I reach up and check it now and then and it's as solid as the day I put it on.

  • Roof Rack Recommendations for a 2014 Kia Sportage
For your 2014 Kia Sportage we have just what you would need. The roof racks we offer will cost much less than the Kia rack and will work just as well. Now if you have a totally naked roof you would want the Rhino Rack part numbers # RRVA126B-2, # RRRLKVA and # DK259 to complete a custom fit rack that is easy on the wallet. If instead you have flush mounted roof rack rails on the roof of the vehicle you would instead want the Rhino Rack part numbers # RRVA126B-2 and # RRSX023.

  • Roof Rack for 2013 Kia Sportage that Has Locks for Feet of Rack to Flush Rails
The locks on the Rola roof racks will lock accessories to the crossbars but if someone happened to have the right size allen wrench and knew what they were doing they could remove the bar from your vehicle and the lock wouldn't have any effect on that. Since most roof accessories have locks already the locks of the Rola kit aren't as helpful as one might like. But this is one of the more value priced roof racks which might be why the features aren't quite as thought out. A rack that has...
