Installation

This custom-fit T-One connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Circuit-Protected Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-One connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of your trailer. The tail light converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

This converter safeguards itself and your vehicle against possible electrical shorts and overloads with integrated short circuit protection. Just install the connector as indicated and rest assured that the wiring system of your vehicle will remain feedback-free.

Video Transcript for Trailer Wiring Harness Installation - 2010 Suzuki SX4

Today on this 2010 Suzuki SX4, we're going to show you part number 118456. This is a T1 vehicle iron harness with a full pull flat trailer connector. First part, to install it we need to go ahead and open up the back hatch and we need to go ahead to move floor coverings to get down to the spare tire area. Next, we also need to remove the threshold. There will be two plastic fasteners, one on each side to remove. We'll take a flat head screwdriver to pull up the centers, and then pop them loose. And then with steady pressure on the bottom, we can go ahead and pop the threshold loose from the snaps.

We'll put that aside for now. Then we'll go ahead and remove the side panels. The independent doors, we'll go ahead and remove. On our passenger side, there will be two bolts we have to remove, and another plastic fastener. Now we'll go ahead and pop away the panel from the side of the vehicle. A trim panel tool works best for this application.

We'll go ahead and pop it lose, there's only a couple of snaps. That was our passenger side. We'll go ahead and do the same thing on our driver side. Now we're going to look for where the wire harness goes to the tail light, and we'll see the connection point. Go ahead and just connect it, and then we can go ahead and install the T connector. The T connector for the driver side will be the one with the yellow wire.

We'll just snap it back into place in between the two halves. Then we'll go ahead and look for our white wire, because that will be our ground. Just forward of that junction will be a factory ground wire. We'll go ahead ad undo the bolt, which will require a ten millimeter socket. Put the bolt back through the loop, and the bolt back in its original location. We'll go ahead and tighten it down for good, and then we'll go ahead and find a location to mount the converter.

We'll go ahead and clean off the plastic on the inside of the panel, and then we'll go ahead and use adhesive that's on the converter to go ahead and attach to the panel. Make sure it's pressed in good. Then we'll go ahead and make the connection over on the passenger side. What we're going to do is wrap our wires over to the passenger side, and eventually hide them underneath the threshold. We'll make our connections as the same things we did on our driver side. Once all the connections are made, we can go ahead and put our panels back into place, basically in reverse order. Make sure the door seal is pulled out around the top of the trim as well, like it was originally. We'll go ahead and reinstall our metal hardware and our plastic rivets. Now you need to reset the rivet. Just go ahead and open up a little bit and push the center back towards the top, and then you can go ahead and push it into place. We'll go ahead and take a moment to zip tie our wires to the inside edge of the sheet metal, and then cover it up by our threshold. Now we'll go ahead and reinstall our threshold. Make sure the door seal is sitting correctly over the plastic and reinstall our plastic rivets as well. Now, you notice that our wire harness will stay with spare tire. When we're not using it, it will just stay with the spare tire. Out of sight, out of mind, protected from the elements. When we do need to use it, we'll go ahead and pull up the floor covering, pull it out, and over the threshold and then you shut the hatch on it. The door seal is thick enough that it won't hurt anything when you shut it. Just make sure you stay away from the latch in the center. Otherwise you'll smash the wires and you'll have to start all over. You can see there's plenty of length to reach down towards the trailer. We'll go ahead and take our tester and ground it to the white wire, then we'll check our brown wire for a running, live circuit, and then yellow for a left turn signal, and then green for a right turn signal. We'll verify our brake signal by checking or a constant signal on our yellow and green wires. With everything working, that will finish it for part number 118456. I shopped around for a trailer hitch and wiring harness that would fit my vehicle so I could pull my new trailer that I purchased to transport my side-by-side ATV. Etrailer.com had everything I needed and at the best price available. My mechanic welded the hitch on the vehicle and the wiring harness plugged right into my vehicle's wiring system without having to splice into wires. It is easy to attach/remove the trailer, secure/release the safety chains, and connect/disconnect the wiring harness to/from the trailer.

No complaints. I got what I ordered at a very reasonable price (the lowest i could find after a very extensive search) and sooner than i expected. The hitch had busted through the box but it was in perfect shape and i cant place the blame on etrailer.com as others have done in their reviews because i know how the usps/ups/fedex people handle packages and its not exactly with tender loving care. Besides that, i could tell that the hitch did fit exactly in the box it just looked like it had been thrown around and because of its weight, had just poked its way through the cardboard. The instructions were very clear and the hitch went on my vehicle with great ease as did the wiring harness. I had a very good experience with etrailer.com and have been singing their praises to my friends and family. If and when i need another hitch or towing accessories I will not hesitate to use etrailer.com again. Thank you for making my shopping experience a very pleasurable one.

Love it! Super easy plug-n-play install. No need to drill a ground hole or use included grounding screw. You can just use an existing screw nearby for ground. Be careful when removing interior panels. Remove outer plastic clips and pull carefully and evenly to avoid cracking interior panels. FYI, I use a bungee cord to hold left and right side panels out of the way but not too much tension. Make sure you check for clips that didn't come out of the metal mounts during removal. You can use a door trim removal tool or if you don't have one use a needlenose pliers to grab underneath the top lip and carefully pry them out. You will want to put them back into the appropriate spaces on the plastic side panels prior to reinstallation.

This is the first time I have attempted to install a hitch. Up to this point I have never had a problem working any vehicle. I had great difficulty getting the bolts holding the trailer hitch to grab. I tried everything. After an hour and a half I gave up. I brought the hitch and bolts to a local garage and the mechanic had to tap out the holes before he was able to install the hitch.

The only reason that I'm mentioning this is so other customers are aware of things that can and do happen. I would definitely use etrailer again and recommend them to others. Even with the $40.00 unexpected charge (for getting the hitch installed) it was still $100.00 cheaper than U-Haul.

Thank you etrailer :)

This is a slick product that does what we want and uses heavy gauge wires. There seems to be some smarts in the box, because with the trailer LED lights hooked up the rate of flashing is just about the same as without hookup.

Observations:

A. Did not come with 2-sided tape for mounting the box as shown in the video. Came instead with a second sheet metal screw, meaning drilling 2 holes (ground lug and box anchor) not one. Came also with one long cable tie, but I could not find anyplace suitable to hold the box with that tie. One does have to mount the box where it will not prevent the panels from popping into place, which means one has to drill a mounting hole in an awkward place.

B. I elected to drill a new ground-lug hole rather than add this ground to the existing stack. My theory is that the factory setup works, but if that chassis ground should fail then the power for brake light + running lights + turn signal would seek ground back through other equipment. Bad things happen then.

C. I used a trailer wire 4-pole tester instead of the recommended probe. Cheaper, easier, faster. Dangle the cable on the driver's side, temp tape to body, watch the lights while standing at driver's door and going through the check list.

Recommendation to improve product mounting experience:

Popping the panels typically results in breaking several of the smaller black plastic push plugs. It would have been a nice touch to have two or three "just in case" replacements for the black push plugs to be sure the three panels stay anchored to the floor after the aging plastic plugs shatter from the removal process.

by:

Wiring harness was great. Instructions need to be updated though to recommend removing an additional clip and a seat belt bolt on the drivers side wheel cover panel prior to drilling the hole for (and mounting) the grounding screw, and mounting the control module. Otherwise, if you pull the cover back far enough to get access it will crack in the middle.

This is the second time that I have purchased a trailer hitch and wiring harness from etrailer.com. Both time the products were of the highest quality and direct fit for my vehicle.

by:

Worked out great plugged kit in and hauled a trailer legally.

by:
2007 Suzuki SX4 Crossover

Installed exactly as instructed, straightforward, with all appropriate hardware included. I like that the hitch kit now includes the fish wires that attach to the bolts to pull them through the frame tubes, whereas the last time I bought a hitch some years back I had to improvise my own. Very pleased with the product, fast and free shipping, and communication with eTrailer. This is my second purchase with them.

Very good product. I spend about 30 mins to installed. Do not drill a hole for ground cable, use the screw close the cable. I saw a video from the curt harness installation. No need to drill a hole. Anyone can do it.

by:

first of all i can't remember the last time i've been so impressed with a company. from the installation video to the informative ordering/shipping process it was a very good experience. the product looks to be of high quality and i am sure i won't be disappointed whe i get to the installation!

Product arrived quickly. I wanted a wiring harness so I didn't have to splice wires. This product is going to work great. Definitely recommend buying from etrailer.

by:

Shipping was fast and efficient. Fairly easy installation. Took me more time than others as I am not that mechanically great. Did it. Very impressed with this company.
Will purchase from them again. Thank you again,

Easy install. Pop a few panel clips, find the factory harnesses, plug and play! Took me about a half hour start to finish. Works flawlessly. Highly recommend!

by:
2009 Suzuki SX4

this harness went on easily, would have been better if the wires going from one side to the other were about 6 inches longer. overall a very good product.

by:
2008 Suzuki Grand Vitara

went on in about 10 min. i did cut my harness and got a groument and driled a hole in my floor bord and ran it out of the suv looks better that way tield it up and i was done !!

2006 Suzuki Grand Vitara

The wiring kit installed easily. Accurate instructions. A must for anyone installing a hitch on a newer vehicle.

by:
2010 Suzuki Grand Vitara

I have not yet had the opportuity to plug my trailer in. Too much snow. As far as installation goes, it took me longer to figure out how to get behind the interior panels than to install. Easy installation. Took a total of 15 min.

by:

Total install took 20 mins and that included cutting and soldering the 4-flat wire to run it outside of the vehicle so I would not have to store it in the cargo are or close it in the door. Works just as described. Excellent product, great price, fast and cheap shipping. A++++

by:

This product arrived right on time. I am very pleased with this simple solution to wiring up my trailer.
