Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located behind the driver's-side and passenger's-side interior trim panels in your rear cargo area.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way connector will be stowed in an out-of-the-way location within your cargo area.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter with Surface-Mount Technology

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Curt builds each tail light converter using surface-mount technology (SMT). This method of construction involves soldering electronic components directly to the surface of a printed circuit board. SMT eliminates the need for leads, which are used in older through-hole technology. The result is a circuit board that is smaller yet provides more routing area and that offers superior performance, reliability and durability.

Curt SMT Circuit Boards

Circuit boards constructed using SMT have been shown to perform better under rough conditions with excessive vibration than those made using the through-hole method. And where would vibration be more likely to occur than in towing applications? Curt converters also produce less heat, leading to increased durability and longer life. In addition, lower levels of resistance ensure better performance, especially for parts that operate at higher frequencies.

Each Curt circuit board is made using high-quality components that are pieced together in the most technologically savvy fashion, leading to greater predictability and reliability in functioning.

Video Transcript for Curt Custom Fit Vehicle Wiring - Trailer Hitch Wiring - C55371 Review

Today we're going to review part number C55371. This is the Curt T-connector vehicle wiring harness with the 4-way flat trailer connector. This is a custom fit part. It is designed to fit the 1998 to 2002 Kia Sportage vehicles. Now on a custom fit part I always like to recommend to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle and it'll show you if this'll work for your application. Now this harness will provide this 4-way flat trailer connector at the back of your vehicle to power your trailer signal lights. This does connect quickly and easily.

There's no cutting or splicing of wires. Basically all you have to do is locate your connection points which are usually in the rear cargo area behind the tail lights, plug in these T-connectors, one on each side, and then run this out the back and you're all ready to go. It does include this tail light converter and this is to ensure that your vehicle's wiring will match that of your trailer. Now this converter is constructed using the SMT technology which is surface mount technology. This is designed to give consistent, reliable performance and will maximize your trailer light yield and intensity while producing minimal heat. They do also ensure superior operation in a lot of your rough road conditions. It also comes with this dust cap which is used on the 4-way right here.

Basically you can just attach that and leave it on if you'd like. Then when you're not plugged into your trailer, you can just put your cap over the terminals and that'll protect it from any damage or from the elements. A few specs on this harness. The maximum amperage for the stop and turn light circuits is 3 amps per circuit and on the tail lights is 5 amps total. This part comes with everything shown here. It comes with a very nice set of detailed instructions that describe how to install it and also gives you pictures of the connection points to help out.

Basically when you go to install this what you would do is go to the rear of the vehicle in the rear cargo area, gain access to behind the tail lights and start on the driver's side. You'll take this T-connector that has the yellow wire in it and what you'll do is unplug the harness from the tail lights and then just plug this in place of that. Then you'll have your white wire on here with the eyelet on it, that's to be grounded. You need a good, clean ground so they include a grounding screw. You can drill a hole and make a good clean ground. Then you'll take this other T-connector that has the length of wire, the green wire is in there.

That's the passenger side. You'll run this over to the passenger side and you'll do the same thing. Unplug the harness behind the tail light, go ahead and plug this in. This converter box here, the black box, you don't want it bouncing around. You want to attach that to a nice flat surface so they do include a piece of double-sided tape that you can attach it down and even give you extra cable ties if you want to secure with those also. Then you just run your bonded wire right here out the back and your 4-way is ready to plug in. But that should do it for the review on part number C55371. This is the Curt T-connector vehicle wiring harness with the 4-way flat trailer connector.

I ordered a trailer hitch and wiring kit for my vehicle on a Thursday evening. The items shipped the following Monday and arrived that Friday. Very fast shipping. Somehow, the weather/snow window was beat.
I would highly recommend etrailers for any needs they can fill.

You will not believe how easy this is to install.
Retains factory wiring, just adds a T- in between to feed the trailer.
