Installation

This custom-fit T-connector plugs into your vehicle's wiring harness, which is located in your rear cargo area on the driver's side and passenger's side. You will have to remove the rear threshold panel and trunk liner to access this harness.

Once installation is complete, the 4-way flat connector will be stowed in your trunk.

It is recommended that you use a small amount of grease on all electrical connections - the plugs on your automobile and the 4-pole connector itself - to help prevent corrosion.

Tail Light Converter

A tail light converter is built into this T-connector. Because most trailers run on a two-wire system - wherein the brake and turn signals are carried on one wire - the separate brake and turn signals from your vehicle's three-wire system need to be combined so they are compatible with the wiring system of the trailer. This converter combines the brake and turn signal functions of your automobile so that they run on one wire to properly activate your trailer's tail lights. Note: This will not affect how the tail lights on your vehicle operate.

Video Transcript for Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness Installation - 2012 Ford Taurus

Everyone Shane here with etrailer.com. Today, I have a 2012 Ford Taurus, and I want to walk through how to install the Hopkins simple vehicle wiring harness. When we're looking for wiring for a vehicle, typically, we're wanting wiring to either pull a trailer or maybe we have a cargo carrier that has lights on it. Maybe we have an enclosed box that maybe covers up our tail taillights a little bit, and we want to be able to get those lights onto the cargo carrier or the enclosed box so that everybody can see what we're doing. This wiring harness is going to give us those options. It's going to give us all of our proper lighting functions, running lights, brake lights, and our turn signals. It's a four-pole connection.

It is going to be compatible with block five, six, and seven pole adapters. What I mean by that is, is if we pull maybe more than one trailer and one of our trailers has seven-pole plug on it, we simply put the seven pole plug on and this will adapt the seven pole plug to give a full light function so that we can use that seven pole plug. Now, when I mean by simple wiring harness, this is going to be a pretty simple, straightforward installation. Simply, we're going to plug in behind each taillight on the inside of the vehicle. It is going to live inside.

So when you're not using it, you simply remove your floor covering. It's in here over your spare tire. Use your dust cap that comes with it to keep any dirt and debris out of it. Tuck it down inside. When you're ready to use it, simply pull it out.

You want to make sure you lay it over this rubber seal away from your trunk latch. Now probably you're asking yourself, is it going to damage the wireNo, it's not. These are actually made so that they will not get damaged. One thing I do suggest is when you lay it in there, trying to lay it like this, because then what you're doing is you're compressing the four wires together, lay it flat the way it's meant to be. Hook up to your trailer and you're ready to go.

As I mentioned, when we're not using it, we simply roll it up, pull up our floor covering where our spare tire is, we can drop it down inside there. It's nice and out of the way where we can load our trunk up with any other items. Now that we've gone over some of the features let's walk you through how to get it installed. Start our installation, we're going to move our floor covering. We're going to remove our threshold. We'll just slide this out.Our threshold, we're just going to pull it up and that's going to release the tabs. We'll set that aside and we're going to remove the three holders. We're just going to twist these off. We're going to do this on each side. And we're going to take a trim panel tool or a flat blade screwdriver. We're going to pop that holder out. We only have one right inside here. Then we're going to repeat that on the other side, we're also going to have one here, actually that I didn't see. I apologize for that. We're going to do the same thing. Once we inaudible 00:03:29 that off, we're going to slide our felt out like this and locate our plug to our factory wiring on our tail light. We're going to take our wiring harness with the yellow or red wire and brown, we'll disconnect our factory taillight wire, we'll match the plug and then reconnect it.It's going to come with a couple of zip ties. We're going to take our converter box, I'm going to zip tie it right to this factory wiring. See the little tabs, we're going to have one on each side. We'll take our zip tie and feed it through the tabs and then we'll tighten that into place. Next thing we need to do, is we need to ground our ground wire. Now we can do this pretty much in any place that has a good piece of metal on it.What I'm going to do is, this face here that goes up to where it doubles up with this, I'm going to use self tapping screw and I'm going to mount it right there. We're going to take our green wire and then right over to the passenger side and we're going to make the connection the same way we did on driver's side. Now we'll test out our wiring using part number I26. Left turn, right turn, brake lights, running lights. Once you've tested everything out, you know it's working correctly. Go ahead and reinstall your panels and your clips and you're ready to go. It's going to do it for look at in insulation on the Hopkins simple vehicle wiring harness on a 2012 Ford Taurus.

  • Turn Signals Flash Quickly When Hitting Brakes With HM11140595
I can take an educated guess as to what is happening with your turn signals flashing when you hit the brakes after installing the Hopkins Plug-In Simple Vehicle Wiring Harness # HM11140595, and it is very likely a poor or loose ground connection. This is definitely the most common cause for issues like this, so take extra care to ensure the ground wire is attached to a completely bare metal surface. I have also added a link below to a help article on 4-way troubleshooting which I do recommend...
