Rob: Rob here at etrailer.Com. Today you're going to be taking a look at the PTC Custom Fit Cabin Air Filter, on our 2016 Mazda CX5. Now a cabin filter is going to do for your car what a furnace filter does your house. It's going to filter all the air coming from the outside, clean all the debris and dirt out of it, before it comes through our vents. And let's face it, the inside of your car can actually be up to six times more polluted than their outside. And that's because once it comes in, there's nowhere for it to go.

So all the exhaust, emissions, dirt, and everything else flying around outside ends up coming in and gets trapped in here. And if we don't check our cabin filter, it can get pretty dirty and get clogged, which not only means that we're going to get all that dirt inside of our car, we're also putting a lot of pressure on the HVAC system, which can cause damage later on down the road.Checking it's going to be an extremely easy thing, and I know we all been at the service center and somebody offered, "Oh, well we can change your cabin filter." But really, there's no reason to pay anybody to do it, because it is a really easy process. So we're going to go ahead and check ours now, and if we need to replace it, we can because we have our new one. We're going to start by coming to the glove box. We're going to open it up over on the passenger side.Now once you have it open, on the very right-hand side on the passenger side, we have this little arm here.

That's going to keep the glove box from coming down too far or too fast. You just want to get your finger behind it, and pull towards the back of the car. That'll unhook it, and you want to bring your hands up to the sides of your glove box. We're just going to flex them in a little bit. That'll allow us to rotate the glove box down, and once we get it to about level right here, we should be able to pull it out.

We'll set it aside so we have a little more working room. And behind our glove box, we'll find this white rectangle. A little tab on the bottom, we'll pull up and then pull straight out. And that'll give us access to our cabin filter.Now you can see already that we have little pieces of debris that did get caught, and that's a good thing because if these didn't get caught in the filter, chances are they're going to go down through the fan and start making a lot of noise. But our filter doesn't look that bad just looking at it.

But, if we grab our new filter, we can see it is doing its job, because it's starting to turn a little bit brown. But, in my opinion, it's not dirty enough to change. So we're going to hold onto our filter so we can replace it once it does get dirty. When you put your filter back in, or change it, you're just going to slide it back into place. Make sure the tabs on the bottom, slide it back in, make sure it locks into place. And then we can just repeat the process in the reverse order to get our club box back in.We'll line up those tabs with the hinges on the bottom, and rotate our glove box up. Just want to grab that hook, make sure it's in front of that bar, make sure those tabs go back in. Let me just push that rod back on, and we're ready to hit the road. But now you can have the confidence to check and change your cabin filter on your own, and save yourself a little bit of money, not have somebody else do it.
