Surge-type actuator features a corrosion-resistant composite master cylinder and a primed finish. Adjustable plate lets you use different flat-mount coupler attachments (sold separately). Bolt-on or weld-on application.

Features:

  • Hydraulic actuator activates trailer's brakes when tow vehicle slows or stops
  • Adjustable plate has 4 different mounting positions for coupler (sold separately)
    • Designed for flat-mount coupler attachments only
  • Composite master cylinder is durable and efficient
    • Glass-reinforced nylon construction resists rust and corrosion
    • Large reservoir provides increased capacity for brake fluid
    • Automotive-style diaphragm cap creates completely enclosed system to help prevent contamination of fluid
  • Acetal copolymer lining provides smooth operation as actuator telescopes in and out
  • Breakaway included
  • Heavy-duty steel construction
  • Primed finish
  • Bolt-on or weld-on installation
    • Requires 1/2" x 4-1/2" Grade-5 bolts (not included) for bolt-on mounting
  • Made in the USA

Specs:

  • Application: trailers with hydraulic drum brakes
  • Gross towing weight: 8,000 lbs
  • Maximum tongue weight: 800 lbs
  • Mounting: straight, 3" wide trailer tongue
  • Model number: DA91
  • 1-Year warranty

Note: Because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes.

When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the hydraulic actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward, once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. When this happens, the actuator contracts, applying force to its master cylinder. This in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

Video Transcript for Review of Demco Brake Actuator - Flat Mount Surge Brake Actuator - DM8759152

Hello, everybody, this is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a look at this Demco Adjustable Flat Mount Hydraulic Brake Actuator for drum brakes, has an 8,000 pound gross towing weight capacity, and as you can see, it has a nice primed finish to it. Now, this hydraulic actuator will activate your trailer's brakes when your tow vehicle slows or stops. So basically, what happens is when you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs, and the momentum will push the trailer toward the rear of the vehicle. So with a surge brake system like this, the actuator's triggered as your trailer moves forward and once your tow vehicle starts to slow down. And when this happens, the inner slide of this actuator will contract back, which applies force to the master cylinder in here, and then this in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage your trailer's brakes.

This one here between the inner slide and the outer case, uses an acetal copolymer lining, provides a smooth operation as the actuator telescopes in and out. Up front here if you noticed, it has an adjustable plate for four different mounting positions for a coupler. Now, the coupler's not included, we do sell those separately. It is designed for flat mount coupler attachments only. Just to give you an idea of the measurements on the mounting holes there up front.

If we measure horizontal, center to center, if we go across, is gonna be right at 4 1/2 inches. And if we go vertically, center to center, it's gonna be right at 2 1/4 inches. As you can see, this is a heavy-duty steel construction, has a nice primed finish to it. The master cylinder, which is in the back here, it is a composite master cylinder, which is durable and efficient. Uses glass reinforced nylon construction, so it resists rust and corrosion, and it gives you a large reservoir to provide increased capacity for your brake fluid.

And if you noticed on the top here, has the automotive style diaphragm cap that'll create a completely enclosed system, help prevent contamination of the brake fluid. Now, the breakaway cable right up here you can see, this is included, has the cable and the hook. And this breakaway cable is required by law. Basically, what this does is prevents a trailer runaway situation. So what you do is take this hook end, hook this to your tow vehicle.

And then what would happen in a case if your trailer became disconnected, it would pull this cable, which would activate this lever, which again would supply the hydraulic pressure to make the trailer brakes engage and prevent a runaway situation. But, again, this is included and is required by law. It is a bolt-on or weld-on installation. It does mount to a straight three inch wide trailer tongue. It is made in the USA. Now, few specs on this. It is for trailers with hydraulic drum brakes. Gross towing weight capacity again is 8,000 pounds. Maximum tongue weight of 800 pounds. This also goes by a model number of DA91. And then one last note on this, because this actuator does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip the trailer with either the reverse lockout solenoid that would screw in right here, or if your trailer has free-backing brakes, so that you can drive in reverse without the actuator triggering your trailer's brakes. But that should do it for the review on this Demco Adjustable Flat Mount Hydraulic Brake Actuator for drum brakes, has an 8,000 pound gross towing weight capacity.
