Bike Trainer with Fluid Resistance

Saris fluid trainer with resistance

The Fluid trainer has a progressive resistance curve which simulates riding outdoors. It gets progressively more difficult the faster you pedal, keeping the power curve consistent. As a result, the trainer has a smoother road-like feel than a magnetic trainer. You can also manually switch gears to make your ride easier or harder - just like in the real world.

Precision-Balanced Flywheel

Saris aluminum roller with resistance

The Fluid trainer features a precision-balanced, zinc-alloy flywheel. This large flywheel helps create the same inertia riders experience on the road when accelerating. This results in a more realistic ride when compared with smaller flywheels. The flywheel keeps spinning even when pedaling has stopped to simulate coasting.

Turbine oil encased inside a cast-aluminum shell creates resistance. As pedal speed increases, the fluid becomes hotter. A fan built into the flywheel channels the air intake to cool the fluid so it won't leak out of the casing and stain your floor.

Available Accessories

Saris virtual training

To experience virtual training, you can connect a speed or cadence sensor (sold separately) to a Bluetooth or ANT+ adapter (sold separately) and train with Zwift, Rouvy, and other training apps. View your ride on your laptop, your smartphone, or in front of your big screen TV. This will give you the benefits of a full bike workout coupled with the excitement of riding real bike routes. Stream thousands of virtual routes from all over the world, or race against other competitors.

Saris training tire

Tire tread does not wear the same on the trainer as it does in the real world. Frequent riders will find that the tread on their back tire wears down much quicker on the roller due to the added friction. Most outdoor tires are not designed to handle that kind of heat. The trainer tire (sold separately) is made of rubber with a durometer higher than that of a traditional road tire. It's built to handle higher temperatures and will save your rear bike tire from premature tread wear.

Saris NFinity Platform for bike trainers

The NFinity Motion platform compliments your bike trainer by creating a natural movement that's easier on your body than using your trainer alone. Just secure your trainer on the platform and you're ready to go. Because it moves forward, backward, and side-to-side, it creates the same motion your bike has when you shift your body weight. This natural movement provides a more comfortable and realistic ride. Additionally, it engages your core muscles, so you can tone your abs while you ride.

Saris training mat

The trainer mat keeps sweat and bike grime off your floor. It's made of PVC foam that absorbs vibration, keeping your ride quiet.

Saris climbing block

A climbing block (sold separately) can be placed under your front wheel to keep your bike level or offer 2 levels of steepness that simulate riding uphill.

Saris training mat

The trainer desk provides a place to put your water bottle, laptop, phone, and anything else you might need for your ride. It also has an integrated power strip, so you can keep all your devices powered.

Video Transcript for Saris Fluid² Bike Trainer Review

Hi everyone, it's Evangeline. And today we'll be taking a look at our Saris Fluid 2 or Saris Fluid Square trainer, right here at etrailer. Let's go. (upbeat music) Let's talk about indoor trainers. So these are used for different reasons. Sometimes maybe during the off seasons, you still wanna stay in shape, but it's too cold outside or not the good situation for riding outside, you would get an indoor trainer.

Or maybe you're like me and you're just looking for quick little time to exercise during your lunch break or in between shifts, you'd look at an indoor trainer. This is gonna be a quiet, dependable, but also relatively affordable trainer. A great way to start. So this is going to be the Fluid Square or the Fluid 2 like some people like to call it. It's a simple trainer where you just set it up, put your bike on, and go.

That way you don't have to plug anything in, you don't have to take off your tires or your wheels, and you can utilize the gears on your bike just like if you we're riding outside. Now Fluid Square comes from the fact that this uses fluid for your training experience. So there is turbine oil in there, which creates that resistance. But because of their patented flywheel design, you have a fan blowing as well. This keeps that fluid cool and makes your trainer last longer.

All the resistance is determined by your bike's gears. So when you tighten this down to your rear tire, it actually clicks once optimal tension is acquired. No need to take your bike's wheels off for this one, you just switch out your skewer and pop it into the trainer quickly and easily. Now if you have a thru axle though, that's okay, as long as you get these sold separately thru axle adapter. So you have a lightweight steel construction and you have adjustable legs.

So if you do have uneven surface you can adjust those legs to accommodate. I always recommend though, trying to find even ground as well as a non-slip surface. You can get this accessory map from Saris as well just to be extra safe. So on its own, as a quick indoor trainer, it works great, but if you want a more extreme experience, a more intense workout, you may wanna start looking at the add-ons available for this. So you can get the speed sensor that goes onto your pedal or your rear hub and allows you to use this trainer with some of your favorite training apps. Otherwise, you could also get things like a climbing block for different incline experiences. So for extreme cyclists, they already have their extreme trainer that they're invested in and they use to maximize their ride. I'm not an extreme cyclist, but this is still a trainer that's really interesting for me because it's easy to set up, it's dependable, it's sturdy, and I don't have to make any drastic adjustments to my bicycle. On that note too, if you've ever used fluid trainers, you might know that the fluid leaking can be a problem for them. So the way this is designed is to prevent that. You have that cast aluminum shell and you have that fan cooling down that fluid. If that fluid stays cool, it stays contained and you don't get leaks. Let's talk technical real quick. So Saris uses different types of resistant curves with their different types of trainers, and you can find that with trainers from other brands as well. The type of resistance this utilizes is progressive resistance. So it's the one most similar to when you're riding a bike outside. Meaning the faster you pedal, the more resistance you're gonna feel because of the wind effect coming at you. Now obviously there's no wind here, so that's what this tries to emulate on your trainer compared to other trainers like those you usually find in random gyms where the resistance is linear. Meaning no matter how fast or how slow you are, the resistance is the same. That one does not feel like riding outside. This one, it does. So the assembly of the trainer may take a little bit of time. You don't have that many parts you have to deal with, but you do have to put them all in place and you have to tighten down one bolt. But other than that, it's quick and simple. So just take your time the first time after that carrying around wherever you wanna go. In fact, let's take a look at how it gets set up. So when setting up your trainer the first thing is set up your space. So whether this is your at home office, your basement, your garage. Here at etrailer this is a meeting or training room and I've taken it over to make it my training room. So push away those desks, push away those chairs, and let's set up a trainer. So I'm using these Saris accessory kit, which includes the training mat, and we're just gonna set this up on our ground. That way our trainer has a good spot to grip on, but also we know where we are setting up. You don't have to get the accessory mat. It is helpful, but just make sure you have a non-slip surface. So you are gonna have to assemble your trainer and it is a pretty simple process. It took me about five minutes to get it all installed. You are gonna need a half inch wrench though to tighten down that bolt at the end. So I do recommend taking some time to assemble it, but after that you're able to just carry and go for whenever. And once your trainer is all set up it's time to set up your bicycle. So first, air up your tires and then replace your quick release skewer with the one included with the kit. So attach your new skewer, tighten that down, make sure it's on the non drive side. But also make sure that once you're done tightening down, your handle is either facing down or backwards. So you're gonna set up your trainer to accept your bike. So push this out and then make sure that this is loose, so that you have enough clearance for your wheels. So insert your bike's skewer into the trainer. So different handles and switches that you utilize to secure the left and the right. So it is a matter of lining it up. Notice here how this pops out to get the best fit for you. Now you're gonna adjust that roller. So tighten it down right until it just makes contact with your tire right there. Once it makes contact, go for two and a half complete rotations. So you set up your space, you set up your trainer, you set up your bike, now it's time to set up your ride. If you are using, let's say the Bluetooth sensor, Saris has the other sensors that go onto your rear wheel, and you're using the app, go ahead and get that ready. But other than that, it's now time to enjoy the ride. Hopefully this video helped you out with seeing if the features of this trainer are what you are looking for in your trainers. It's nice to know that you can set it up literally anywhere, whether it's the meeting room of etrailer.com or your own work at home office area. This was a look at the Saris Fluid 2 or the Saris Fluid Square indoor trainer at etrailer.com. My name is Evangeline and I hope you enjoyed the journey.

Well made, but requires a quick release hub. I'm using an older street bike and will have to buy a new wheel.

I never did figure out how to attach my bike to it. There was not sufficient instruction. I will certainly try again. Then if it gets working I will update my review.

Product arrived as described and was fairly easy to set-up. I did a test ride and it will work nicely as an alternative to getting out on the road during the bad weather. Looking forward to breaking it in this winter.

This bike trainer is AMAZING! I think I actually might like it more than riding outside! I'm still able to get a great workout, and I don't have to worry about traffic. It's absolutely worth the money!
