Best Sway Control for a 2005 Honda Pilot that Cannot Use Weight Distribution
Question:
I am buying a Prolite trailer with a weight of 2200 lbs. What should I have for a hitch to control sway? In the Honda owners manual they DO NOT recommend a weight distribution hitch. I wonder if that is to remove any liability for an improperly set hitch.

Honda is one company that does say not to use weight distribution on certain models and certain years of those models. It has more to do with the uni-body frame not being able to handle the stress related to the use of weight distribution.
Sway control on the other hand should not be a problem. For sway control only I recommend Reese friction sway bar # 83660. It is a good, economical option when sway control is needed. The only other thing you will need is a bracket that mounts to the ball mount for the sway bar to attach to on the vehicle side.
For a Class III or IV, 2 inch hitch use bracket # RP26003. And for a Class II, 1-1/4 inch hitch use bracket # RP26005. I have included a link to the right to a video that shows how this system installs.
Proper loading of the trailer will also help to control the sway. Tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight. Moving weight forward or rearward on the trailer will increase/decrease tongue weight respectively.
