Question:
Will the Yakima Keelover Canoe carrier/mount fit on a 1999 Dodge Durango SLT with factory rails, carrying an Old Town 14 1/2 foot canoe?

Helpful Expert Reply:
The Yakima KeelOver Rooftop Canoe Carrier # Y04069 mounts to most factory and aftermarket roof rack crossbars thanks to its adjustable mounting brackets. If your Durango SLT has factory crossbars whose dimensions do not exceed 3-1/2 x 3-1/2-inches then this canoe carrier will fit just fine. For a canoe over 14-feet it is recommended that your crossbar spread be approximately 30-inches to ensure stability while underway.
If you do not have crossbars (only the side rails) you'll first need to install a roof rack in order to use the KeelOver. The most cost-effective option we offer is the Rhino-Rack Vortex Aero rack consisting of parts # RRVA126B-2 and # RRSX100. This roof rack uses lightweight anodized aluminum crossbars that are compatible with the KeelOver's hardware.
As a lower-cost option you might consider a canoe carrier that does not require crossbars, such as one of the foam-block types shown on the link provided. These simple and lightweight carriers rest directly on your roof.
If you have a 2-inch hitch on your Durango another option is open to you: a hitch-mount load support such as the Rhino-Rack T-Load # RTL002 along with a single SeaSucker Monkey Bar # SEA54FR.
It is always a good idea to check your vehicle owner's manual for any guidance as to roof weight bearing capacity to ensure you do not overload the roof.
