Weight Distribution for a 1999 Ford F-150 and 2012 Skyline Layton 186 Travel Trailer

Question:

Was wondering if this hitch would work well with a 1999 f150 and 2012 skyline layton 186? The trailer is 2400 lbs unloaded probably 3200 loaded. The tongue weight is 325 lbs. I am also looking into the Tekonsha Prodigy P2 to replace our Drawtite Adventurer II time delay brake controller. Would this stop the jerking associated with trailer braking with the time delay controller?

To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle.

If 325 pounds is the unloaded tongue weight then loaded at a weight of 3,200 pounds would put the tongue weight around 430 pounds. A system rated for 550 pounds such as # PS49901 would work well.

I looked at some pictures of the 2012 Skyline Layton 186 and it looks like there could be some propane tanks and/or batteries or other accessories mounted to the front. These could potentially block the installation of a weight distribution kit.

The brackets that attach to the frame will need to be 30 inches back, on center, from the center of the ball coupler. And they require 5-1/2 inches of space on the frame. This means that the frame has to be clear from 27-1/4 inches to 32-3/4 inches back from the center of the ball coupler.

If that area is not clear then you will also need chain hangers # RP58305 which bolt to the sides of the frame.

For the brake controller, going to the P2, # 90885, will greatly improve the braking and eliminate that jerking you get with a time delay controller. I fully support your decision to go to the P2, its a nice upgrade!

I have included some links on weight distribution and brake controllers for you.
